2000 Maxima GXE standard amp wiring

I have a 2000 Maxima GXE with a non-Bose system (tape deck door does not say Bose).

How do I tell if I have a "basic" or "premium" system?

What kind of stock amplifier would be in my car? How could I find a wiring diagram for it?

I want to hookup a portable MP3 player to my stereo and don't want to mess with the wires with a cassette adapter and the local radio stations in my area interfere too much with the FM adapters (already tried this).

My idea is to splice/solder into the "line-in" wires going from the head unit into the amplifier. I can wire it with two way switch scheme so that only the radio or MP3 can supply the amp at one time - or I can just supply the amp with alternative 12V and run the MP3 player with the head unit off.

Can anyone help me with the standard amplifier wiring diagrams for my car?

Thanks - you guys are really helpful.

A couple things:
1) My Haynes manual for my 4th gen has *all* the stereo wiring diagrams I could ever hope for (if I had my stock stereo that is ). It's a very big help for any wiring. I suggest you pick one up for the 5th gen, they only cost like $12.95.

2) I'm pretty sure there's no external amp on a non-Bose system. The head unit has an internal amp that prolly pumps about 30 watts max per channel to the speakers. To verify this, refer to your Haynes manual .

Hope that helps.

the 5th gen doesn't have a haynes manual yet, i guess they are waiting till the next maxima comes out, so they don't have to remake the manuals for the 5th gen, which sucks ****.

i think justmax is right, without the bose system, you won't have any external amps. the speakers are probably getting all the power from the headunit. so i don't know if you'll be able to tap the signal. but when you find out or figure it out let me know. i'd like to know this one also. i have the bose so i just want the FYI.

I think you are right about no external amp. - but does anyone know what this device is (see pictures) - it looks like an amp?
