Polycarbonate (lexan) vs. Plexi glass?

I am going to build my box soon and I am going to put a window in it to see the sub through the ski hole. I am planning on using 1/2" thick but I'm not sure which one to use. I can't find anybody that sells plexiglass that thick either locally or on the net. However I found a company that sells polycarbonate(lexan) in the thickness and dimension I need. Is lexan a good substitute for plexi? Is it strong enough?

BTW the sheet I found is 1/2" x 12" x 12" for $17.05, is this a reasonable price?

Polycarbonate is magnitudes stronger and more expensive than Plexi. I think 3/4" will stop a 9mm, can't remember exactly. But it's the stuff they use for bulletproof shields and eyeglass lenses. Mcmaster Carr sells both, but their prices aren't the best. www.mcmcaster.com
