help: CD player "Err" message
help: CD player "Err" message
I have a 97 SE with a factory CD player that recently will not play at all.
When I place a CD in the slot, the CD player clicks and displays an "ERR" message on the screen.
Has anyone else a similar problem? Is there an easy fix for this (ie: cleaning the laser).
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks

I've only experienced this a few times w/ my 95's BOSE POS. It's always been because of the disk. I'd try pulling any fuse for the radio, turning the key on, and then replace the fuse(s). Hopefully that will reset the radio
Good luck.
Good luck.
Occasionally when it is humid or the radio is extremely hot I get the error message. Sometimes changing the CD fixes the problem, and other times just turning the unit off and waiting will fix it.
That's my experience

one time on a trip from SF to LA, my non-bose cd player just melted one of the discs. there was visible heat damage on the cd, and it screwed up a lot of the songs. It was after about 4 or 5 hours of continuous cd playing, never doing that again...
This is the same problem I have - mine will not under any circumstances play CD's anymore & whenever I try to, it displays the "Err" message. It started off as an intermittent problem & got progressively worse.
My understanding is that this is actually a chronic failure associated w/ the 4th Gen. Bose CD (Clarion manufactured) units & is usually attributed to a failing/failed laser pickup. There are several co's that do repairs on the Bose units, but the repair usually runs around $179.
For around the same price or a little more, you can pick up a brand-name 10 or 12 disc changer, so it really doesn't make sense to blow the $ on repairing the stock unit as long as your receiver is working correctly otherwise.
Just buy a changer, be happy.

If you're ok with getting one of those FM-Modulated CD Changers, go for it, but otherwise your Bose/Clarion CD Changer won't play CD-R's.
I'd like to add that it seems the 4th Gen Bose HU's (they're made by Clarion?) are very cranky when it comes to playing CD-Rs....I can get them to play, but often time, I will get the CD Err message, either that or the CD starts skipping like a ****.....
My '97 SHO played them perfectly!!

So, if I read correctly, the problem you were having was actually related to the CD load/eject carriage (for lack of a better term) not drawing the disc INTO the headunit sufficently to allow the hole in the CD to seat properly on the player's hub-spindle, thus generating the "Err" message?
Man, I'm gonna have to try this. I hope that does the trick - to think: I've been without my CD player for over a year. . .
Simple solutions are a blessing and a curse!
Thanks.

I just don't think the bose hus from the 95-96s age well. What'd you expect from something with the Clarion name?
Mine seemed to play CD-Rs and everything just fine. I never got an err message in all the time I used it - however, I'm fairly certain that it seemed to scratch CDs. I had a batch of new CDs that I played frequently in the Bose and only in the Bose for a while, and they all had the same scratch patterns. Plus, they all had clipping noise when any audio played back on most of the songs...you can't hear it on most cd players, but you could on the bose and now on my alpine
I think the old couple that owned the car before me probably never used the CD player, just the radio.

I know this is old, but the link is dead, what was the fix?
