Rear shelf open air subs....

Anyone out there have any install pictures or install details of 2x10's or maybe 3x8's in the rear shelf of their maxima? I'm wondering about the rigidity of the rear shelf, how much reinforcement its going to need, among other things... Most important...How does it sound??

IB is a tough proposition. I had a friend with 2 10's in IB in his accord. They sounded fantastic, but lacked the low end response I really enjoy from sealed boxes. That said, it dramatically increases your trunk space and really does have a nice SQ sound to it. The key to a rear deck IB setup is to seal off the deck from the trunk as much as humanly possible. Use expanding foam, Dynamat and just about anything that will fill gaps and/or add mass to the rear deck. Fabricating a new rear deck facade would be the easy part. I cannot stress how important it is to put your whole heart and sole into sealing and deadening the rear deck. You will thank yourself for all the hard work once you are all done ...

This isn't an install that you want to start if you won't be keeping the car for a while. As the reinforcement process is rather involved, depending on how well you want it done. I don't have a free air setup, but have rebuild the shelf for a sealed box mounted below the deck. Send me an email with description of what you want to do and I will send some pics and some of my personel experience. By the way, my deck is rebuilt to hold three twelve's. Not much more could fit.

Pics? Did you have to eliminate the trunk crossmembers? I'd like to check it out ...

What are you referring to as crossmembers? If you mean the spring steel beams that raise the lid, they are gone. A gas strut is easy enough to install in their place. I need an email address to send pics. I don't have pics posted on the web. Actually, there are one or two on the www.dcmax.org page. But that's it. So if you email me a note, I'll try to reply with some pics. But it takes a while for me toupload with my POS phone cord connection. And sometimes my computer crashes during the upload.

Holy crap man, now that I have a taste, I HAVE to see more pics of the underside of that beast. Send pics to joel@bigham.com or just shoot me an email and I will reply with an upload folder on my FTP site you can upload to at your convenience, whichever you want ...
