If your going to do that, you really need to get a sub that is designed to be installed "free-air". I tried to install my regular sub without a box to begin with. It sounded like crap, basically because it was trying to use the entire trunk as a box. I had nothing but "flopping" sounds from my sub. I also fried my amp within 24 hours. I don't know if it was coincidence or if the setup caused the amp to burn up but they replaced my amp and built me a box and I've had no troubles since.

You would be better off waiting until you can afford the setup that is going to cause you less aggravation.

Even "free-air" isolates the rear wave of the cone from the front wave. If you are thinking about just connecting the sub to an amp and letting it flop around in the trunk or back seat, forget it. It'll definitely sound like crud. The only sound that won't be cancelled, will be distortion.
