Thoughts on rim sizing for auto-x
Well, about 2 weeks til the first local auto-x (capital racing club, not SCCA) CRC is alot of classic sportscars, miatas, and subarus....but I'll try to challenge with the maxi-boat...
Anyhow....I will be using my "winter" rims....G35 coupe 17's with probably Sumotomo HTRs or Kumho 712's (whatever I can find cheap this week)....yeah, a little heavy, but they're actually 2 lbs lighter than my stock 17's and they clear my 6th gen brake kit...
Anyhow, the G35 17's are staggered front 17x7.5 (30mm offset) and rear 17x8 (35mm offset)....and I got to thinking that *perhaps* it might be advantageous to run the 17x8's in the FRONT for auto-x, since most of the weight of the car is up front, and I'll want more grip there.
At this point, I'm probably going to have 225/50s on the 7.5s and 235/45s on the 8s....
anyhow, just throwing the idea out there...I would think wider rims up front would be advantageous for a front-heavy FWD car, especially in auto-x.
Any thoughts?

I would give it a try..... you need very little traction in the rear to keep the Max in line ... so unless you have a RSB .... you won't do much but understeer with the same size tires..... so big front small rear may just be the ticket..... heck I might even run an event with crappy tires in the rear and good tires up front... just to see how much it rotates.... might spin and kill a cpl of cones

I will probably try something like this for this season. I'm thinking it will work out OK, and can tweak it with the sway bar, shock settings, and tire pressure if I have a problem, but I'm not too worried about it.

That's exactly the idea. I run 225f/205r myself. Depending on tire type you can probably increase front/drop rear pressures to create more oversteer or vice-versa. That's assuming you have "handling balanced" pressures to begin with though.

Good stuff guys...
This is the info I was looking for, I was wondering if there was any advantage to running smaller tires in the rear. Only auto crossing once in 2004 I noticed that the Maxima had a little more over steer if I over inflated the rears, IIRC I was running 35 PSI F and 45 PSI R on ZR rated 235/45 17s Wan Li tires.
Im trying to select a set of race wheels/tires for my car and as of right now im looking at 245 F and 225~235 R but it will have to wait until my money situation is better.
