i think i just removed my clear coat

well after taking off my pinstripes..i needed someting to take off the residue so i bought this solvent stuff that was supposedly clear coat safe....after testing it in a inconspicuous area...no color came off so i thought it was all good. after rubbing it on the entire area across the car where the stripe was i went to rub my finger acrosss the surface it was smooth below and slided across the surface until it stopped at the somewhat matte finish....just wanted to let you know not to use this product. i applied wax right away after feeling the surface. ill let you guyz know wat the name is after i go check it...but i got it from wal-mart. i don't this solvent stuff is safe for our cars. its like paint thinner!! let me know what you guyz think. whats the best way to protect my finish after this happens. besides wax.

Nothing on planet earth is safe around maxima paint. Don't drive too fast, the wind might cause your hood paint to chip! Be sure to swerve around mosquitos and other bugs too....

But seriously.....is there a list of "ingredients" on this product? (would be on the back of the bottle probably)....

and..its difficult to tell what you're saying about the paint, because..

ouch, i'm sorry to hear that.....That is deceptive labeling on the product. Was it specifically automotive application?

to irish44j...its not really appearance noticeable...its just the finish that felt different'. the portion of the car that the solvent like liquid was applied to,my finger did not slide across it very well while the surrounding area it slid across like butter. and yes it was specifically an automotive product.

maybe it only stripped off the wax?
I know the wax gives the paint that "smooth-like-butter" finish...

Sounds like a solvent that stripped the wax. Don't sweat it too much. Any solvent or bug/tar remover is going to strip the wax.

You may have some surface scuffing from the removal process (and hopefully you used something soft to rub this solvent on it too....) so you might have to polish up the area a bit before re-waxing.
