Coke + Tin Foil = No rust ?????

If you dip crinkled up tin foil into some coke, and scrub metal that is rusting...

Boom! No more rust!

I seriously thought the person who told me to do this was playing a joke on me!

Has anyone else heard of this?

Yes, about two weeks ago on the Discovery Channel show "Myth Busters" the two hosts did just this very experiment on an old F-150 with a rusty front chrome bumper. One host used a high dollar polishing compound on one half of the bumper while the other host used the coke and aluminum combination on the other half. Turns out, the coke and aluminun combination did a much better job on the rusty chrome than the name brand chrome polish.

ha i saw that episode too! some of there stuff is arguably biased by the way they test them out, but overall great show.

chris, what are you planning on testing it out on? or were you just posting to get opinions on it.

seems legit to me, but i haven't seen it work in person. i know some people do it or recomend to do it on rusty battery terminals.

I actually tried it out because my custommaxima.com license frame was completly rusted (thanks to the recent monsoons in mass)....but now all the rust is gone (well, almost all) so maybe I wont throw it out afterall

It's all the acids (phosphoric I think is the most prevalent) they dump in Coke. Great for getting the rust off your car and stripping the enamel off your teeth. The guy who told me the Coke trick also said (this could easily be an urban legend, but still cool) that they clean all the Coke delivery trucks' engines with Coke.

no pics but I cleaned a rusty knife with lemon, it literally smokes. I used those yellow plastic squeeze bottles of lemon juice from a supermarket, not shure if its any different from juice out of a real lemon

I think it'll work because I used Vanilla coke and it took it off easily.

I just tried lemon juice on my car's rust on the rear quarter panel and on the passenger side-skirt...and it didn't work. I even went back and got lime juice because I thought I got the wrong kind. They were both "100% from concentrate," in the plastic lemon/lime cases...what gives?

strange, well when I did the lemon thing but it was on a big knife blade with lots of rust. Not shure what gives but I did it a bunch of times with it because I thought it was cool watching the rust smoke up. Sorry it didnt work for you

Rust hole? I think this method will only work on surface rust, not cancer!
