suface rust

how do i get rid of surface rust? one day as I was backing out of my driveway my car slid into a gate. there's no dents but I just need to buff oout some paint as well. I saw that it caused some paint to come off and I was hoping to fix it soon. but due to the weather (salt season) the bare metal has a bit of surface rust. I know before I aply touch up I need to get rid of the rust. do I just sand the rust away then apply touch up? any input is appreciated thanks

I have this problem in a little area above my front left wheel. I went to Wal-Mart and bought this sandpaper pencil from 3M, rust jelly, and touch up paint. I still have not used it yet b/c of the weather, but all I'm going to do is put some rust jelly on the rust for 10 minutes and let the rust come off. Then sand it down with the pencil, then put some touch up on it.

Good luck.

Yes you would use a sanding pencil to clean the rust off, and then use touch up paint. I would also use something like Prepsol to clean the area first. Then dip the pencil in water and use that to get the rust off.

I'm assuming that also works for paint that is bubbling a little?
