When cleaning my wheels I usually use just soap and water, however, if they are really nasty looking then I start with Meguiar's Gold Class Instant Wheel Cleaner to brake up the brake dust, rinse, then wash with soap and water.

Also, might try some Mother's mag and aluminum wheel cleaner/polish. Does a pretty job on alloy wheels.

TWO things here:

One... were you using the wheel cleaner on the 1971 Datsun wheels (as shown as your vehicle under your name)?

Two... Mothers Mag/Aluminum Polish should only be used on non-clearcoated wheels. My sawblades are clearcoated, as most recent wheels are. For clearcoated wheels, use a paint polish like you would use on your paint.

How do you know if your wheels are clear coated? I have original alloy wheels on my 86. It doesn't appear that they are by looking at them.

Thanks.

Take a bit of metal polish on a white cloth and rub that onto the wheel. If your cloth turns black, the wheels are NOT clearcoated. If there is no black residue, then you DO have a clearcoat.

Isn't that just with aluminum? Or will a chromed wheel do that too?

I had this happen to a firebird with aluminum wheels: can't be fixed unless you repaint, sorry man. I used armor all on my tires and didnt take the excessoff the wheel. A body shop told me that there is something in wheel dressing that will stain, haze Alum. wheels.

Chrome wheels generally aren't clearcoated, so yes it would leave a black residue when used on chrome wheels too.

I've used Mothers Mag/alum polish on my valve cover and it turned the cloth black. I've used it on my wheels (sawblades) and the cloth did not turn black.
I've used chrome polish on chrome trim, and again, the rag DID turn black.
