For sure use a liquid, not powder. There are some 'special' liquid detergents made for microfiber but I haven't tried any of them. I've had good luck with the stuff we use for our regular laundry. (I don't even know which brand).

The biggest thing is not to use any fabric softener, either in the washer or dryer. I prefer to air dry my MF after washing, though.

I handwash them with dawn. Don't use any fabric softener though if you use a machine.

I use Sonus Der Wunder Wasche for my microfiber towels and Dreft for the terry towels. I have been known to wash my mitts in hot water, Dreft, and bleach.

Does fabric softener in the towels end up damaging the clear coat? I've always thrown in my mit and absorber in the washing machine with Tide Free and Downy and had excellent results. What's the deal with fabric softener?

Fabric softener tends to have certain additives that will cause smearing and other undesired effects when detailing.

I use woolite detergent and vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser thing our washing machine has. I use the dryer on the low (delicate fabric or something) setting.

Like Bluesbrekr said, make sure you don't use a powder as the granules might not disolve all the way and then scratch the paint.

FYI it is also recommended to not use fabric softener when washing regular towels. Ruins their absorbency or something I believe.

Correct on the absorbency issue.

My microfiber towels get nasty at the shop. They get washed in the machine, hot water, bleach and Tide. I make sure I rinse them twice so all the detergent comes out. Then into the dryer on low heat. They come out clean, soft and ready to go.
