Safe rust remover for under the hood? Help!

I just bought a used 97' maxima that was from New Jersey... So needless to say there is alot of rust under the hood. I want to remove the rust and then put a protective coating on everything to prevent this from happening again.

I have read about using acids, such as coke and lemon juice to remove the rust. Thats all fine and dandy but is it safe to use on the car? I mean I want to remove the rust but I don't want the acids to further errode everything thats rusted. Help!! Whats is something safe I can use to remove rust under the hood?

google it.
awesome stuff.

depending on what parts are rusted, it may be easeir to remove and clean them than to try to remove the rust and paint them on the car.

if it's chassis stuff, use a wire brush to remove the worst of it, then use a chemical agent to remove the rest of the rust.
typical rust removing acids and such won't damage the metal- only remove the rust. then clean very well with water, prep as directed for the paint, then repaint.
