50/50 solution of water & alcohol for Menzerna IP?

Just got a box of goodies from Proper Auto Care. (Menzerna IP, FPII, FTG, some Klasse AIO, along with some 303 for the interior.) Got me a detailing brush too. Anyway...........

As soon as I get my Propel pads in the mail, run over to Lowe's and score me a Porter, it's gonna be go time.

I've been reading the application tips for these products, and when it came to the Intensive Polish, they suggested that when using the Porter Cable, "Mist the surface with a 50/50 solution of alcohol and water. Wipe off residues and inspect the surface. If defects and swirls are still present, continue compounding. If the surface is swirl free, wipe off any remaining residues with a damp Terry cloth or Microfiber cloth."

my first question I guess is: Is it necessary? I noticed that in their hand applying method, they didn't mention using the solution. Just a damp micro fiber cloth. I wonder why the difference? I reckon I'm slightly skittish about using the alcohol, so if it doesn't lend any more credence to the process than the damp cloth, then I'd prefer to use the damp cloth.

Secondly: Would I be correct in assuming that they are talking about a solution of water and rubbing alcohol. I figure it ain't scotch and water, but if it gets the swirls and the imperfections out, bring it on! It"ll be tough not to mist myself in the face a whole lot though.

Thanks for your help

The main point is to have the pad a bit damp. It helps the IP (or any polish) spread better and not get absorbed cpmpletely into the pad. I have used a mist of detail spray. Some guys use a plain water mist. I don't know the specific reason for the 50/50 mix and yes, they mean isopropel (rubbing) alcohol....save the scotch for after you're finished!

I use a mist of detailing spray as well. Griots Speed Shine lately.

I'm a whiskey drinker for after.

I'm curious though, does using the detailing spray make it slightly more difficult to accurately gauge your progress or inspect the surface for remaining imperfections. Guess I'm wondering if the detailer might cover up the imperfections making it more difficult to find and get at em with a little more aggression if need be.

Thanks for the help guys

Cheers!

The detail spray will not cover any imperfections. You'll be able to check your progress just fine.
