Tips for removing scratches?

I hope that this hasn't been asked before (well, I did before but in the wrong forum). I did search and browse this and other forums but could not find anything similar.

I have a smoke '05 Maxima SE. Yesterday, while cleaning my car I noticed that my driver side door, rear driver side passenger door and further back all have tons and tons of scratches on them (at least 100).

The scratches are very shallow and white in colour. The car doesn't look like it has been keyed but I am wondering if some animal has been scaling the side of my car and climbing all over it, thus the scratches. I suspect chipmunks since I killed a bunch in my garage over the past winter (well, they killed themselves by getting into some poison that was still in the original packaging I had on a shelf..... so it was more of a suicide I guess).

Anyway, can anybody recommend a proven solution to remove these scratches? Will standard polish take them out or am I out of luck? I am probably going to take it to a local body shop that I trust to get their opinion but I was curious if anybody else had any thoughts.

Thanks!

I'm also wondering about this. I have a 99 Maxima that has been driven alot and has alot of little scratches all over. Hopefully I can fix these, rather than having to repaint the car. =/

If your fingernail doesn't get stuck in them, then they are shallow enough that some polish will correct. Do you have a Porter Cable or other Dual Action machine to polish them? If so, then try the least abrasive polish first, a couple passes may do the trick, if not then work your way up to something more agressive. Shouldn't need a body shop, just a detail guy.
