I still have pretty much full bottles of Meguiars heavy and fine cut, swirl remover and show car glaze but really want to try the Optimum. I'll probably use that stuff on the Surburban and stuff hehe

Congrats, Gone. I have a 7336 with the Sonus DAS pad kit and the Sonus SFX pads (including the 4" spot pads). I am also planning to add the Sonus SwirlBuster pad to the arsenal and I want to use them both on the PC and my Chicago Electric Rotary.

As for polishes, you can't go wrong with either of the following:

Poorboys
Optimum
Menzerna
Meguiar's #83

Nice, I just picked up a 7336 from Lowes with the Sonus Das kit from Autotopia but haven't used them yet either. I really wished for around $60 they'd give you two of each pad, but what can you do..... At least they're reusable so I don't have to get new bonnets for every detail.

I hope they both live up to the hype they get around here.

Excellent choice! I hear ya on the costly part....I spent at least $250-$300 on my first PC/Pad purchase (even with a discount code).

Also, MrGone - you might want to read up on the difference between Optimum Compound and Hyper Compound. You probably don't need both. From reading on autopia.org, I think that Hyper is better for rotary use (although I have no first hand experience).
I can't wait for summer break to come in a few weeks, polishing my paint is first priority.

That's good to hear. I have Menzerna IP and FP. I used those by hand on a couple spots and the results were pretty good. Can't wait to see what the PC does for them.

It didn't feel like a complete waste of time even though it was

i used one with regular autozone pads and it seemed useless so i returned it. the pads would fly off the backin plate or they wouldnt rotate. im gonna buy one again and give the SONUS pads a try....... maybe that would work, but either way the PC seemed to be spinning wayyy too slow to do any real magic. and that was on setting 4

Am I correct in assuming the IP is best suited to be used in spots with heavier scratches and the FP should be used on an entire panel?

IP = Moderate Scratches and Swirls
FP = Lighter Scratches and Swirls or some hazing

Both can be used on entire panels.

The pads aren't supposed to rotate (spin) like a rotary with a DA

Prinz - I still have not had any luck with #83 on the PC....still gets caked on the finish and hard to remove. Any hints?

Gone - the PC ought to rotate (spin) somewhat, but not near as fast as a rotary. No problem to use IP on the entire vehicle if it needs it. You'll want to follow up with FP though. The IP can haze a bit and the FP puts down a killer finish.

Blues: Are you working the product in thoroughly? I find that #83 tends to cake up if the product isn't worked in well. I also work #83 one small section at a time to ensure it is worked in.

Gone: It all depends on the pad choice as well. For a moderately swirled finish, you will need a cutting pad to start with. Also, considering you are going to be polishing a 740i, bring a lunch. To do that car will take you at least 4 hrs from start to finish.

BTW, do you have any clay?

I believe I'm working it enough. How do you know? Does it dust? I've only used it with my PC, not the rotary yet. Do you mist the pad with QD first?

I'd really like to know how to apply it properly.....I have a big bottle of the stuff!

yeah, the 740i is going to take a lot of time, then get me really pissed off when it gets dirty again, but the look and feeling right after you finish makes it all worth it (if you haven't passed out )

All of my parents cars are going on 8 years old now and have never been really detailed, just washed regularly and I don't think they even really wax them. My Dad had a tendancy to go through automatic car washes at times (had being the key word). The clear on all of the cars is pretty rough and since they are all (except for the Durango) dark cars, the swirls and some light scratches are very visable. The Surburbans windows have really heavy water spots.

I'm hoping once their cars look better than new they will be motivated to keep them that way (be more careful washing them when they are dirty, was them more often because there is a nice, deep swirl free shine they will want to show off/etc)

Blues: I work it until it's almost invisible and you see dust. After that point, I wipe it off.

You know what Prinz, I don't remember for sure. All I know is that I was so pi$$ed that I went back to the PB polishes. It may have been a green Propel pad or a white VC Lake Country. What would you suggest?

I've had success using the Sonus SFX cutting pad with DACP. In fact, I am going to use that combo on my gf's Neon when I tackle it today.

Gone: What happened with the Bimmer?

So I finally placed the order, came to $389.01 all said and done not including the 7336



Also was tinkering with the Bimmer today and man o man is it in "bad" shape. TONS of swirls and scratches (from clients I guess.... You'd think it would be from keys but the car has no key hole on the passenger side sooo...) but from what I can tell I should be able to fix it. The paint seems almost gray, tons of hazing, etc.

Only plus is that makes the finished result look that much better Only down side is the package is scheudled to come the same day we have a Maxima meet

Detailing is very...very...expensive in my experience. I can't wait to get back into it though. Looking forward to the after pics!

Well...I bought my PC from lowes - the model 7336sp for ~$115 or so. Then, you can buy the pad kit from autopia for 57. So you will save money buying from lowes and getting the pad kit and all else from a detailing source IMO.
