I have a rotary buffer that I have used before with a simple foam pad to apply/remove wax on my car, and the Sienna. However, I am looking for some good 7inch foam pads for cutting, polishing etc. I checked the sites in the sticky, however all of them are either 6.5" or 7.5" and I dont want to spend $10/pad and have them not fit.

Also, if I wanted to get a new backing pad, what would you guys suggest? Would it be better to get a new backing pad, and a set of foam pads that I know will fit?

I will be practicing on a dark green hood to get a feel for the buffer.

It might help if we knew what model buffer you use....

 

Its a black and decker 9531. Not made any more, not sure how old it is, but it runs well(brushes in motor are ok, commutator and winds good too). 2100/2500rpm low/hi.

 

Rotary = Orbital? If so, you can't really get any scratches out with those, I suppose to you could, but to get a scratch out you do know that you're cutting clear using heat and the orbital doesn't get hot even to cut. But I suppose you could but I wouldn't..

 

No idea if today's backing plates would work with that model buffer. The ones now allow you to quickly attach velcro backed pads to them.

Thanks for the reply. Ive been looking at a cyclo polisher(what you have in your avatar correct?) also. Although not cheap, they look awesome and any pad you need is available. Would you recommend it?

The Cyclo is pretty good, especially if you switch it over to the Edge system which perfectly centers the pad. The Flex 3401 would probably be better though, more power (thought not quite as much as a rotary) and easier to use on cars with lots of curves.

Scott, I wish I could afford something like that. I am looking at the ~$150 or under range, and I found a few cyclo's (used of course) for just under that. The 7424 is always an option too. Are there any others you recommend on my budget?
