Best way to dyno a auto
Best way to dyno a auto
I had just gotten my 1st dyno done on my 2000 maxima se and was wondering what's the best way to dyno the car. Do you want to keep it in 2nd gear, 3rd gear, or have overdrive off. Reason why I am asking is my dyno was kinda weird and want to know have you run an auto on a dyno so when I get my y-pipe I will get a better dyno result. Here is my last dyno and the dynorun. 001 the torque is wrong since it spiked at the end of the run.

To get a solid dyno in 3rd gear, what you need to do is get the car up to a steady speed on the dyno in Drive (O/D Off) such that when you punch it, it won't downshift to 2nd gear. I think this is probably around 70-75 mph or so. Then just take it all the way up to the rev limiter.

I don't know if the Maxima's automatic does this or not.

My Accord V6 had a winter start mode where if you put it into 2nd, it would just stay there no matter what. So you could get a dyno of the entire rev range, but only in 2nd gear. Not as accurate, but sometimes relative gains/losses are more important than all-out accuracy when testing mods.

Exactly

My advice try doing some 3rd gear pulling on the hwy so you know exactly what speed you have to be going in-order for the tranny not to down shift to 2nd when floored. Even though it will work I believe 70-75 may be too high. Try cruising on the hwy with the o/d off at about 50-55 and punch it to see if the tranny down shift. If it does go up in 5 mph increments until you find that speed where the tranny will not down shift. Remember what that speed and you're set for your pulls on hte dyno. When I dyno mine, I also turn on the heat and put the fan motor at the 3rd position so not to put too much amp draw on the alternator. This might help with the engine cooling especially if they have a fan in front of the car.

just tested this yesterday night
for the 2k2's.... can't you just leave it on 3? o wait.. nevermind... or wait.. yea.. leave it on 3... and slowly rev it up to 6600 rpm right??? press on the gas hard enough where it won't shift to OD. like half throttle?? won't that work? cuz i dynoed my car on 2nd gear... and was not satisfied.... IMO, leave it in third, you should be going around 35 mph? then gradually step on the gas. and about 4400 rpm, go about 3-4 throttle?? i dunno... ive been working on this for awhile... im not sure if this will work... but im sure it will still be on 3rd gear, as long as it doesn't downshift or upshift?? does anyone agree?? or disagree??
third gear trickery
don't know if the same is true for 2000, but when I disconnected the speedometer sensor on my '92, it disabled the detent(upshift) function on the tranny, causing it to stay in whatever gear was selected...?
