So. just curious, how long does everyone leave there oil filter in for?

I"m leaving my M1 105 in for 5-6 months before pulling it.

 

I change it with every oil change...

 

I believe that the M1 filter will last up to 6 months/7,500 miles. It is equal to the Amsoil SDF filter line. Mobil defers to the manufacturers for length of time and mileage on oil change and filters. If you are running Mobil 1 oil and filter, you could change the oil and filter at the same time, twice a year.

Are you running Mobil 1 or Amsoil?

 

I change my filter along with the oil as well.

I'm using mobil 1 in the summers and amsoil asl in the winter. I don't put many miles on so i'm thinking changing my oil & filter twice a year. That should be plenty safe i would imagine.

 

That works. Why the alternating between Amsoil ASL 5w-30 and the Mobil 1?

Amsoil runs on the thick side of 30 weight and Mobil 1 runs on the thin side of 30 weight.

Well my only reason is that i'm not crazy about mobil 1 5w-30, so i use the amsoil 5w-30 in the winter and the 10w-30 mobil one in the summer.

I understand. I use the Amsoil ASL 5w-30 year round with 9 month intervals; the filter is changed at 4-4.5 months or 5,000 miles.

I believe (personal opinion) the Mobil 1 SS 10w-30 is better than their 5w-30 grade and more shear stable. If I decide to go to Mobil 1, the 10w-30 would be my choice year round in Hotlanta.

 

So your thinking 4-4.5 months until u change the filter with amsoil 5w-30 asl? I was thinking changing the oil & filter at the same time at 5-6 months , now u got me thinking?

I am using the Bosch 3323 oil filter ($5.50). The M1 filter is a higher quality product but it cost twice as much and will easily last 6 months. I have gone the 12 month interval with Amsoil ASL 5w-30 with the Amsoil SDF filter changed at 6 months. I did not like the used oil analysis (UOA), lead count was high and it thickening to a 40 weight. I emailed Moderator Bill about it and he suggested that I shorten up the drain interval to 8-9 months. That gave me a range of 4-4.5 months interval for the Bosch oil filter. With one filter change, that's how I determined my interval of 8-9 months.

Unfortunately, I spilled the Blackstone container with my last Amsoil sample after draining the oil in July (8.5 month interval). So I will have to wait until March 2004 for my next sample.

Since you live much further north (Chicago suburbs) from me with wider temperature swings and of course extreme winters, changing the oil and filter at 6 months is a prudent decision. Do the oil and filter change intervals when the weather is not extremely hot or cold. For instance, early October to early April.

I'm not really sure what kinda interval i'm going to do here, i might just do what your doing since it seems pretty acurate. I"m kinda thinking changing my oil twice a year and doing three filter swaps.

If you stick with the Amsoil ASL 5w-30 year round, you will be fine. The Maxima seems to like it. Since discounts on Amsoil are available through maxima.org members, the cost difference between it and Mobil 1 are very small. That being said, Mobil 1 in the SuperSyn formula is very close to the regular Amsoil versus the old Mobil 1 Tri-Synthetic. Mobil 1 is the best mass market synthetic oil.

Amsoil is tough to beat when it comes to extended drain intervals.
