Oil change needed or not?

Oil change needed or not?
I changed my oil and oil filter late November last year, and I've now done 10,000kms since then in 3 months. My mechanic doesn't think I'll need to change both right now as its been a short time since I changed it last, he says I could do another 5000km's before I should do it. On most drives, I do over 100km's between starting and stopping, mostly at over 100-110km/h (highway speeds), so based on that info, is he correct, or should I go ahead and get it done?

Even though you run a long time inbetween stops, that is a lot of miles to go inbetween changes. It would be a little better if you used a synthetic oil, but I still wouldn't go that far. I would not, however, jump to the ridiculous side of the spectrum like 2 Da Max and do it every 1k. That is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much!!! With synthetic, you can get away with like every 5k in normal driving. With regular oil, every 3-3500. Your case might be a little different, but I would still not go quite 10k inbetween.

yeah that seems like a lot. about 6000 miles. a little too much. 2 da max: you change your oil every 1k miles?!? that seems like a huge waste to me. its not the new oil after that short of a distance is going to make any sort of difference

You cannot switch back and forth between synthetic and regular oil!!! Synthetic oils bond so well that a residue is left on the engine internals after the oil is settled in the pan. Synthetic oils are so much better than conventionals that they actually break them down. So, by putting conv. oil in after synthetic will cause the oil to be broken down (new oil comes in contact with residual synthetic on engine internals). This equals trouble. Don't switch back ever. "Once synthetic, always synthetic."
By the way, its just an oil change. Its not that expensive, and if not done at proper intervals can prematurely wear out an engine. Rule of thumb: conventional oil? Change ~3000mi. Synthetic? ~6000-8000.
