Manual Trans Fluid

I'm getting ready to change my 5 spd fluid today. I was planning on buying Mobile 1 Synthetic. What weight should I get? Any other words of wisdom?

Owner's manual has GL specs and weight information. I'd check the GL rating carefully before using. Using GL5 in a tranny rated only for GL4 is a no no

Check the how-to sticky. Redline MT-90 or Amsoil is the stuff for our trannies. GL-4 rating only. Don't mess with the stuff at Autozone, etc.

I just changed to Redline MT-90 last month and the shifting is noticeably smoother/easier. It costs a little bit of $$, but well-worth it IMO. By the way, use GL-4 fluid, whatever brand you use.

Got your PM - thanks.

Is there a HUGE difference from Mobile 1 to RedLine?

Mobil 1 is GL-5 rated. Use at your own risk.

Dude,

How many times do we need to say this? DO NOT use a GL5 rated tranny fluid like Mobil 1. The GL5 stuff will eat up your soft metal synchros. Use ONLY GL4 rated stuff, i.e. Red Line or Amsoil. If you can find something else rated GL4, then use it. Good luck at finding something else fairly easily. Go to the Red Line or Amsoil websites and find a local dealer. Haggle with them until you can get it for about $8 per quart. It is time and money well spent. Enjoy.
