When to flush trans? What to use?

When to flush trans? What to use?
The service department where I used to work told me to change my fluid. My cars a 2002 sitting at around 51K. SHould I just change the filter, and a little bit of the fluid, or go for a whole flush? Should I use the Nissan trans fluid, or is there something after market that works better?
