Hi all Just wanted to know how frequently all of you guys clean it? I have my K&N for a year now with GAB and it seem to be very dirty in some parts. Is it time to clean it? I've heard that thre was problems with over-oiling filter.
Speak out.

when I use to have my stillen popcharger, that thing got very dirty very quick....like every 8-10k miles it was DIRTY....and the oil was literally gone too...the popcharger itself became some other color...

i'm not sure if its like this with other K&N filters....but I think its a pain to keep cleaning....if I was stock, I'd rather buy a bunch of stock panel filters from Nissan....its $8 a pop from daveB....then just change them out every 15k....

I have a panel filter with only about 12.5K on it and I haven't cleaned it. I read somewhere that it should be cleaned about as frequently as one would toss away a conventional paper filter. In my experience, I was only getting about 22/23K out of an OEM filter and they were toast.

So I will monitor my filter and perhaps clean it in about 10K. Cleaning too soon and too frequently is counter-productive, IMHO.

as far as the over application of the oil, it is bad because the excess filter oil gets sucked in and contaminates sensors, intake components, and whatever else it eventually gets to

Especially with the chance of over-oiling or not waiting long enough before start up and getting the pink stuff in the MAF.

I think it depends on were your filter is located. I'm not sure what the Cold Air Intakes look like for Maximas (whether they sit near the bottom of the engine bay or on top). If it sit down low I'd probably clean it every 15-20 k. I'd also buy an outerwears prefilter to keep it clean. If it sits up top I'd wait 25-30 k.

Every other oil change for me. I rotate 180deg when I don't clean/recharge. If/when I remember, I rotate 90deg every month. Gets dirty fast... makes a big difference, idles much better after cleaning/charging.

I have a panel type in the stock air box. I clean it every spring whether it needs it or not (20,000 - 25,000 miles).

I usually just take a look at it every so often and see if it needs cleaning... it doesnt take too much time to clean it and in my opinion it's definitely worth having a clean K&N filter.

Did my panel filter after 50K... I would shake it out occassionally and flip in the mean time... Does not get that dirty where I drive... It will depend if its cone, GAB, and roads you drive how fast it will get dirty... There really isn't a universal formula that applies to all equally

this is after very frequent "off road " trips...

Every other oil change or if it looks dirty.
Today, I just cleaned the cone filter off my Injen for the first time. It looked okay the last time I changed the oil, but this time I really need to clean it.

Doesnt matter how many miles you change it, matters how dirty you get it in the location you are at. K&N recommends to clean it when the crud is as high as the mesh but that seems too dirty to me.

I wash my K&N every 10K or so and do not re-oil.. the oil is what killed my original MAF sensor.. only 3 days after i installed a brand new K&N!

Wow! I assume we are talking K&N panel filters . It looks like people are cleaning them very often. I had one in a prior car and I think I went 30-35k before cleaning and re-oiling. Of course I would open up the box and clean out any loose debris about 1-2 times a year.

I just dropped a new K&N panel in the Max and also the wife's Pathfinder. I'll probably go 30-50k before cleaning depending on how they look.

Manual says replace every 30k (nissanusa.com says every 15k). I think K&N filters should be cleaned at 30k too, which would be the equivalent of replacing the paper filter.

like was mentioned, I check it every few months and remove debris. as far as cleaning it depends on your driving conditions, but K&N claims it filters better the dirtier it gets. Unfortunately flow is decreased.

I have a CAI. Does this affect how often i should clean my K&N? I installed it about 5 months ago and havent looked at it since but i was wondering if that particular placment of the cone would need me to clean it more often. thanks
