The biggest loss in energy is to heat. The heat that is thrown away and not used to move the vehicle mainly goes here:

- Heat out the tailpipe
- Heat from the radiator
- Heat thrown off by the engine
. (The above is included in the 62.4% shown as engine losses.)
- Heat generated in the transmission
. (The above is included in the 5.6% shown as driveline losses.)

There is an implication from this Government site that 2.2% of the energy is wasted running accessories. I don't consider that energy wasted.

The 17.2% waste shown for standby / idle is why you don't want to let your car sit and idle for very long. It is more economic to stop the engine and then restart it when you can move again (like waiting for a train at a crossing).
