99 Max, Tranny Drain And Fill (not Flush)

first, yes i searched. didnt get a diffinative answer.

im looking to do a drain and fill on my tranny. i understand i can use dextron III. no additives? or do i need an addative? and how many quarts of fluid typically is drained when you pop the drain plug out? (no, im not dropping the pan.) i need to know how many quarts to buy, cause i mean...its not a good idea to drain it then go get the fluid haha.

i know, drain and fill isnt going to get rid of all the bad fluid blah blah i read the other posts where people have said this. im planning on doing a couple drain and fills. i just need to know how many quarts typically are drained when you pull the drain plug. then ill multiply that number by however many drain and fills i decide on doing.

thanks guys.

Buy 5 quarts. You will need 4.25 or so to refill. I did 3 drain and fills over a week going into Mobil 1 syn.

maybe i should start doing this myself, the last time i did this at the dealer for 100 canadian

the hardest part is not to overfill, whats the best way to do this to know exactly how much fluid to put in?

100 canadian isnt bad...roughly 90 american or so. around where i live its 130 for a full flush. but what im going to do it after i drain it add it quart by quart and check after each one. when i get close to the max line start goin half quarts or even quarter quarts.

yeah but the hard part is that the fluid should be checked while the car is running, and if u put too little it will run a bit dry = damage, if u put too much then too much pressure in the tranny = damage. so what to do ? star the car each time u add a bit of fluid and run through the gears then check the level ? that sounds like a pain

AT or MT?

If it's AT:

I buy Nissan Matic D. Like 2.99/qt at Nissan.

This is for a 5g, but it's nearly identical for an A32.

There are a lot of posts on here about this....(i.e.: measure it!! when you take it out and put that much back into it when done...assuming the level is correct prior to draining it!!)

As a rule of thumb, you get about half of the fluid out, or 5qts or so, maybe closer to 6 depending on how long it drains. Just buy 7qts and incase you get alot out you'll have enough on hand. No big deal.

thanks michmaxfan. i know there are a lot of posts saying to measure it. even the manual says that. but my problems were that 1) i dont have anything to measure it with and 2) how am i going to get to autozone or someplace to buy more fluid after i drain an measure it?. so i just felt i needed to ask for a average number. 7 sounds good though haha

I didn't mean to come across demeaning or anything, but wanted to drive the point of measuring it when done draining so you know how much to put back in, not just 1qt at a time and then measure, add 1qt and measure, type of thing. I did want you to know that it takes or may take 5-6 qts of new fluid so I said to buy 7 qts so ya got enough and just measure the old. I use an gallon jug and mark it off in half qt increments of water by using a 1cup measuring tool....8oz per cup...32oz per qt...128 oz per gallon. Then put the old ATF in the jug and you got simple measuring device. When close, top off using dipstick and std protocol for tranny fluids. I just wanted to help ya, sorry about the way it came across.

i didnt even see it as demeaning or anything like that, so dont sweat it. my post was supposed to be a apreciative/contemplative tone...i guess thats the hard part about the internet.

i just did mines about 10 mins ago.I was doing an oil change and i said maybe this would take care of my slightly harsh shift 1-2. 98k miles on mines, when i drained it out it was almost like the oil but smelled like trans fluid and has a redish cost so it was good.

I remember everyone saying 4 qts on drain and refill. I took about 3.87qt out but i said wth and put 4qts in. its just 2 hairs over the hot line, but it cured my harsh shift for today aleast.

For some reason its hard to check the level on an auto while the car is running, its all over the place.

i did the drain and fill at the dealer last november

Why does nissan call their fluid Matic-D ?

It should be easy to check on the level if the car has had a few moments to settle down after a run, OR if you just put fluid into the trans. Wait a few moments and read multiple times and you should get solid reading. Otherwise, check it in the morning when cold and let it idle and keep checking it and you'll see the level change and be sure to follow guidelines on checking it from a cold start so ya don't overfill it.
