MT90 not GL4 anymore?
MT90 not GL4 anymore?
So im not too sure of how many of you could be aware of this. I recently bought some, it was ordered in so i didnt see the bottle till i got it. Well when i got it, it said MT90, so i assumed it was GL4. As i brought it home and started reading it, i noticed no where it mentioned GL4. So that kinda sucked i had to return it and try source some GL4 down.
I dont know if MT90 is going to GL5, or maybe it was a mis print on the label or something, because on the site they still list it as GL4.
Thought id give you guys heads up, just to check the bottle before paying for it.
Chris

Did you phone where you bought it from before you sent it back?
I suspect none of the older bottles specify "GL4" anywhere.
I just go with Quaker State GL4 75w90 from Mr. Lube. Locally, Pennzoil lube joints also carry GL4.

Hmm the odds. I know before when i had bought it, it clearly stated GL4. Now on these other bottles it didnt. Maybe it was a bunch of mis labled or something, because the other ones i got said GL4 too.
Bobo. I am going for synthetic, i was using the quaker state gl4 from mr lube before, but i noticed notchy shifting when cold, once i switchd to synthetic its much easier to shift, smoother, and is more willing to go into first while moving.

Quite frankly, I didn't notice any difference in shifting following the change in gear oil, relative to the factory fill.
I appear to have the leaky tranny seal virtually under control now that the seal has been replaced properly. When I went in to top up the gear oil, I think Mr. Lube overfilled the transaxle.
Maybe Redline MT90 down the road for me, but I'll just continue on with the QS for the time being.

Yeah. Actually id recommend Amsoil MTG 75W90. I planned on going for that thought id try it out, but i couldnt get it for another week so and i didnt want to drive around with GL5 in my tranny for a week so i just got the redline. You will notice a difference when you switch to synthetic. If your running synthetic oil, id run synthetic gear oil too. Tranny probbaly gets more abuse then an engine does. Id run synthetic in my engine, but i have developed a small valve cover leak id like to keep small untill i know for sure its that and not the inner timing cover.
Have you ever considered AutoRX? Two applications would be advisable at your mileage. I used it before switching to synthetic oil. It has stopped many a leak based on testimonials I have read, but I am not sure if it would help in that regard in your case.
amsoil synthetic tranny oil is great. i can start my car and shift into any gear easily on my 6 speed. the tranny oil before i drained it was still looking fresh-ish (according to my mechanic) and it still shifted a whoollllle lot better.
Redline MT-90 is fine for GL-4 apps no matter what the bottle says. It will protect like a GL-5 oil, but its formulation allows it to do so without being unfriendly to transmissions that spec GL-4.
That said, Amsoil MTG is as good or slightly better for most people.
