Switching from 10W-50?

CORRECTION: Thread name should say 5W-50*

For whatever reason, the owner before me used Castrol Syntec 5W-50 for oil changes for 73k miles. Now at 80k, would there be any benefit for switching to 5W-30 or does it really not make a difference? OCIs are about 3500 miles.

I am at 311,000+ miles and still use castrol 5w-30,with no apparent problems..So i'd say stick with what works.

I've never heard of 5w-50. If there is such a thing, I wouldn't use it.

I have been running synthetic oil for the past 20 months. Prior to that, I used Castrol GTX 5w30 most of the time.

I am currently running Esso Extra XD3, PAO, full synthetic, in 0w30. This oil is not available in the United States. It garners rave reviews on BITOG and consistently returns superior UOAs relative to Mobil 1 synthetic 5w30 oil.

Are you sure you know how to read?

I believe the oil you are referring to is Esso Extra dino oil, not XD3.

I am talking about Esso Extra XD3 synthetic oil available only at Esso bulk plants (and not stores) in 0w30 and 0w40.

Why don't you take your cynicism to the BITOG board, run a search on the oil I am talking about and educate yourself.

There is such as thing. Fairly common for a syn 50 weight. Tha said, with so much VII, it probably shears to a 40 weight pretty quickly.

hmm day off tomorro, im headed to walmart

BTw why r u so offended that i see your oil sold at walmart in the lawnmower section, maybe thats what it was desined for !!! its definitely not designed for cars unless some ESSO exec designed it for himself and keeps it to him self, why is it not sold anywhere then ?

Get with the program then.

Get on BITOG and educate yourself about XD3.

A great number of Americans would be happy to use XD3 as it is superior to Mobil 1 and only costs about 60% to 2/3 the price, even at your favorite store (Wally World). Get the joke!

Here you go, no mistakes here, no its not lawnmower oil but it is available at my local Wal-mart. I guess Toronto is just a bigger city so we have more variety here than compared to Edmonton. Is it the same price that you pay ? (I wonder how much money Wal-mart makes on this product)

I don't mean to screw up this thread, so I'll stop after this comment re: the above.

I was aware the 0w40 was available at some Wal Marts in the US, but not in Eastern Canada.

You don't show a picture of any 0w30, so I trust Wal Mart doesn't stock it.

The bottle on the left is dino oil, the 0w40 on the right is synthetic.

I use the 0w30 synthetic and locally have to go to an Esso bulk plant about 30 kilometres away to get it.

My point is that the 0w30 XD3 synthetic is superior to Mobil 1 based on numerous UOAs posted on BITOG, as well as member input.

Mobil1 does not give good UOA's in Nissan engines. I'm a BITOG member as well and love it. I'd stick to Valvoline Maxlife full synthetic, Pennzoil Platinum, or Amsoil if it were my choice.

BTW, perhaps the previous owner used 5w-50 because Nissan engines like thicker oil more?

I wasn't referring to Nissan engines. I was referring to numerous different vehicles who posted their UOAs for XD3 on BITOG. I can't remember if any of them were Maximas. In fact, I doubt that any of them were.

The XD3 0w30 is heavier at operating temperatures than Mobil 1 5w30 and is less prone to shearing down.

Ditch that 5w-50. Use a good 5w-30 instead.
