I'm looking to buy a tester, but for now money is tight so I can only buy 1. The Cylinder Leakage Tester (Leak Down Test) is only a bit more in price than a standard Compression Tester.

Can the Leak Down Tester perform all the tests the Compression Tester can do plus more? Is this the one I should buy?

You can get a compression tester for under $10 at Harbor Freight. Works just fine.

But a leak down tester is much better. It will tell you exactly WHERE you are loosing compression (rings, intake valves, exhaust valves, or head gasket).

 

Aaron I picked up that leakdown tester. It says it has a "universal 14-18mm adapter". Is this metric thread adapter going to thread into the 3rd gen holes? I thought I remember buying a 5/8 SAE spark plug socket.

I'll wait to hear back before I remove it from the packaging in case I need to return.

 

14mm will work. It's a VERY common size. Open that package up! You got it right.

14mm is the size of the actual threads of the spark plug hole. 5/8" is the socket size for the spark plug.
