I've been shopping around for some rims that I want 2 purchase in the spring .. & I keep reading about 1 piece or 2 piece or 3 piece ... what does this mean? What do the pieces consist of?

Is it higher maintenance?

1 piece the whole thing is one big cast. cheaper, unless it's forged casting 1 piece like SSR or Volk TE37.
2 piece the rim and the face can come apart. $$
3 piece the outter rim, inner rim and face can come apart. $$$.

Good question, how is a 2 or 3 piece beneficial. Or is it just for looks?

i know i know

ok say you happened to hit a pot hole or something and bent your rim OMG this is the end of the world if you have a 1 piece rim, but now lets say you hit the pothole with a multi piece rim -( 2 piece )- well well looks like you can have the outter most part of the rim shipped out and fixed.

Ok timmy this is the moral of the story now pay close attention:
its cheaper to fix a multi-piece rim than it is it fix a 1 piece rim.

my local tire store told me that 1 pc are better for strength. The way I understand it is that as the rim is one complete solid piece, when you hit a pothole the whole rim absorbs the shock. Makes sense to me.

price

I would go for the best looking rim at a good price, and not go for an expensive 3-piece. If you were talking about a Porsche, you may go that way, and be looking for extreme light weight. But I think the lighter weight may also be easier to damage. I haven't shopped in a very long time but I remember you can easily start talking about $500+ each when you get into those nicer rims.

Weight

I am fairly certain that it is possible to make multi-piece wheels (actually you can't properly refer to a one-piece as a rim - only a multi-piece wheel has a separate "rim") that is much lighter than a 1-piece.

3-piece wheels look nice, are very light, but cost a small fortune. Of course, there are a few models of 1-piece wheels that have fake bolts to make it look like you have multi-piece wheels.

Actually most racing lightweight rims are multipieces.
