What grade gas do you guys put in your car?

I use 93....
i work at a gas station and everytime i see a maxima i check to see what kinda grade gas they are putting in their car... i usually ALWAYS see them put in 87 and i get irked.. but 1 out of every 5 maxima owners put in 93 or plus (89).. so i feel alittle better..

i even saw some guy with a brand new 2k2 GLE put in regular.. i almost wanted to go out and tell him to put in 93.. oh well

then there are times whenre i see people who have Luxo cars and put in regular.. i dont understand people soemtimes.. if u can spend 45K+ on a car.. then u can put in premium grade fuel

I've only used 89, get great gas mileage, never hear a knock or ping... I'm not wasting the extra $3/fillup for 91.

my manual recommends "premium," which, around here, is 93+ heh. Sometimes I fill up with some 94 for s&g.

You don't hear knocking because the car has a knock sensor. The ECM had to retard timing to eliminate the knock, therefore reducing power and gas mileage.

Yeah but premium fuel from some gas stations is worse crap than the cheapest fuel in another gas station. For example Clark has 100 octane but I would rather use Amoco 87 instead. Same with Shell their premium is worse than Amoco. Amoco Ultimate, now BP,(93) is all I use...

Re: What grade gas do you guys put in your car?

I put in premium.....which in most cases is 91....the only 93 available is at chevron and the gas station is out of my way...so I will go there once a week or every two weeks depending on my schedule

I see no problem paying extra for the premium fuel...I think it makes the car perform at its optimum level....but that's my opinion

I run 92 and higher, depending on what's available. I usually run with Mobil. Sometimes, I throw in a bottle or 2 of octane booster. However, I need to run higher octane because of my chip.

91 is "premium" here, so that's what I use. There are a few stations in town with 92, but they're out of my way by quite a bit.

I always heard that premium is not cleaner, just not as explosive (so no knock) w/ higher compression or boost. Car and Driver recently did an article w/ dyno tests on different grades of fuel. Most cars were unaffected. My maxima is - I calc'd lower milage (3-4 mpg) w/ low grade fuel vs. premium. I only use premium now.

nothing but 93

the difference in 10-15 cents per gallon isn't that much, even when you fill up a full tank.. i feel better knowing my car is fed with the better stuff..

So far I've only had the chance to fill up my car 2x. I used premium Chevron w/Techron, and will always use premium whenever possible.

Correct! Some poeple think premium has "more power" than regular. Technically no, it just resists detonation better, so your engine can achieve higher compression.

I use premium as well, but honestly I have never noticed a performance difference or mileage decrease if I use regular.

im not talking about the octane rating as much as the quality or the gas, for example Mobil gas to Wawa gas

The 2k2 Maxima requires the premium grade gasoline if I remember correctly. Even if it doesn't, it should, because higher octane is certainly nice in a high-performance engine like the VQ 3.5 Liter (I know it's not technically high-performance, but you show me an N/A 3.5 Liter from the factory putting out 255 HP, while having incredibly fuel economy at a cheap price). You don't technically need high octane until you are lowering the compression to run a supercharger (Remember, all a higher octane gas means is that it will not detonate or explode early before it is ready to combust. The lower the compression, the easier it is for it to detonate early), but you may as well play it safe and run the higher octane. Early detonation = Suck, and timing retard also = Suck! You want to get as much horsepower/torque out of the engine as you can, to show those ricers your tail-lights

I thought it was the opposite: high compression engines require high octane gas because compression increases heat within the cylinders, increasing risk of detonation. That is why high performance engines tend to have high compression (10:1 or above) and require high octane gasoline. I don't have an S/C so I dunno about compression
modifications, but I am fairly certain about the relationship between compression and octane.

There are some high performance engines that use regular. GM's Northstar V8 uses regular, as does the Honda Accord 200hp V6. If you think about it, it is smart engineering...regular is so much cheaper than super.

Differences in Brands?

I use Mobil, 93. Anyone find any positives or negatives with any particular brands? Texaco, Shell, US Gas, etc? Just curious.

When in Cali I ran 91, now I run 93.

All it does is resists more compression and I doubt our cars would really detonate on 87 at stock, but just to be sure I'd put at least 89 in. The differece between 91 and 93 in our cars is non-existant.

However, I once rented a 2k2 Maxima when my car was in the shop. It came with Hertz Brand 87 Octane gas. Like any normal org member I drove the **** out of it because it was a rental. 200 miles into that tank the CEL came on (only 600 miles on odometer). The CEL said knocking.

I did not remove the code, put premium in for the next tank and almost instantly the light shut off.

Thus, in 2k2's I would not put 87 in.

Where I live, 91 is 10 cents more than 89. So, you put in 30 GALLONS per fillup?

That would make it $3 more per fillup...
