What grade gas do you guys put in your car?
What grade gas do you guys put in your car?
I use 93....
i work at a gas station and everytime i see a maxima i check to see what kinda grade gas they are putting in their car... i usually ALWAYS see them put in 87 and i get irked.. but 1 out of every 5 maxima owners put in 93 or plus (89).. so i feel alittle better..
i even saw some guy with a brand new 2k2 GLE put in regular.. i almost wanted to go out and tell him to put in 93.. oh well
then there are times whenre i see people who have Luxo cars and put in regular.. i dont understand people soemtimes.. if u can spend 45K+ on a car.. then u can put in premium grade fuel

I put in premium.....which in most cases is 91....the only 93 available is at chevron and the gas station is out of my way...so I will go there once a week or every two weeks depending on my schedule
I see no problem paying extra for the premium fuel...I think it makes the car perform at its optimum level....but that's my opinion

I always heard that premium is not cleaner, just not as explosive (so no knock) w/ higher compression or boost. Car and Driver recently did an article w/ dyno tests on different grades of fuel. Most cars were unaffected. My maxima is - I calc'd lower milage (3-4 mpg) w/ low grade fuel vs. premium. I only use premium now.

Correct! Some poeple think premium has "more power" than regular. Technically no, it just resists detonation better, so your engine can achieve higher compression.
I use premium as well, but honestly I have never noticed a performance difference or mileage decrease if I use regular.

The 2k2 Maxima requires the premium grade gasoline if I remember correctly. Even if it doesn't, it should, because higher octane is certainly nice in a high-performance engine like the VQ 3.5 Liter (I know it's not technically high-performance, but you show me an N/A 3.5 Liter from the factory putting out 255 HP, while having incredibly fuel economy at a cheap price). You don't technically need high octane until you are lowering the compression to run a supercharger (Remember, all a higher octane gas means is that it will not detonate or explode early before it is ready to combust. The lower the compression, the easier it is for it to detonate early), but you may as well play it safe and run the higher octane. Early detonation = Suck, and timing retard also = Suck! You want to get as much horsepower/torque out of the engine as you can, to show those ricers your tail-lights

I always use the highest grade i can find (91)... i dont mind spendign a bit more- maybe if my car was stock i'd worry less but when my car is like it is I'm supersensitive haha

I thought it was the opposite: high compression engines require high octane gas because compression increases heat within the cylinders, increasing risk of detonation. That is why high performance engines tend to have high compression (10:1 or above) and require high octane gasoline. I don't have an S/C so I dunno about compression
modifications, but I am fairly certain about the relationship between compression and octane.
There are some high performance engines that use regular. GM's Northstar V8 uses regular, as does the Honda Accord 200hp V6. If you think about it, it is smart engineering...regular is so much cheaper than super.
When in Cali I ran 91, now I run 93.
All it does is resists more compression and I doubt our cars would really detonate on 87 at stock, but just to be sure I'd put at least 89 in. The differece between 91 and 93 in our cars is non-existant.
However, I once rented a 2k2 Maxima when my car was in the shop. It came with Hertz Brand 87 Octane gas. Like any normal org member I drove the **** out of it because it was a rental. 200 miles into that tank the CEL came on (only 600 miles on odometer). The CEL said knocking.
I did not remove the code, put premium in for the next tank and almost instantly the light shut off.
Thus, in 2k2's I would not put 87 in.

That would make it $3 more per fillup...
obviously your use of gas and you screen name don't go together..

that's where you live...
I put in 16 gallons, do the math and get a lollipop.
(about 18 cent difference)

That would make it $3 more per fillup...
