Nitrous bottle question

Because of my stereo I am not able to mount the bottle to where the valve is pointed toward the motor. I have it running parallel to the axle beam. The question is should I redo the stereo to accommodate the bottle or is it fine mounted the way it is?

Re: Nitrous bottle question

in my friends Civic we mounted it across("along the beam") rather than front to back...I think as long as the nozzle is angled in the up position its all good!

The reason why they suggest to mount the bottle with the valve towards the engine and angled up with the mounts is that the N2O inside the bottle is in liquid form. The tube inside the bottle (pick-up tube) that is connected to the valve is also angled diagonally from the valve to the bottom of the bottle (on the inside). The pick-up tube is also pre-positioned from the factory so that when you mount your bottle with the logo up, the tube is able to suck up all the contents. Under hard acceleration, the liquid is going to shift back towards the bottom of the bottle (if mounted according to manufacturer) and thereby not leaving you dry.

All that to tell you that I think that you will not notice a difference as long as the bottle is pretty full. Once the bottle starts to be a little more empty, you may loose some effectiveness due to the pick up tube running dry under acceleration. Just my guess though.

Thanks for the responses. I was hoping that was my surging problem.

That would be an easy and inexpensive place to start. Post a pic of your trunk and maybe we can help figure out a place to put the bottle. I know how much a pain rearranging the stereo would be.

The only thing is I have a wall that comes down flush with the edge of the rear window. Its the only way to fit the bottle unless I tear the wall down and start again.

thats the same way we setup my friends Civic, the wall is on hinges to sort of hide the bottle. anyways I've seen a lot of cars with it mounted horizantily, but like JAIMECBR900 said if the bottle is full you shouldn't see a difference. so far in my friend's car I haven't seen any adverse side effects.

do you have a bottle warmer?? I know maby guys who have blamed problems on what they thought was their nitrous malfunctioning, but after they got a warmer and got the pressure up to 8-900psi or so their complaints soon stopped!! maybe the surging is attributed to that...just a guess!

You may not have to tear the wall down totally. Maybe angle both ends in (so they match) enough to fit the valve end of the bottle. You can also opt to go with a setup of two smaller bottles. I think, correct me if I'm wrong, that NOS has 6 pound bottles that are smaller. Maybe harder to find or need to special order from NOS, but it would be easier than tearing up your stereo setup. Just a thought.

Yeah I have a bottle warmer and I usually keep it around 950-1000psi. Even when the bottle is full it still surges. I have the .042 nitrous jet with no fuel bypass jet and I'm at 80 psi with the Walbro. I put 1 step colder plugs gapped down .005. I made sure the Nitrous pressure regulator had enough lube to work properly. I have ordered new Ignition coils and I am getting my fuel injectors cleaned and balanced. If all of this dosen't work, I'll probably take it out.

The only thing I could add is that you angle the label towards the front of the car. That way when you accelerate it forces the liquid to the back side of the bottle so it will last longer before running out of liquid.
Actually now that I think of it, I believe that is in the NOS instruction manual, I don't have one anymore but I do remember reading it.

I installed it the wrong way at first(label facing up) but when it started surging I reread the manual and corrected the position. Hopefully I will find the problem because it runs like a scalded cat when its not surging.
