Knock Sensor HELP Needed!!

Ok.. I have the 0304 code with NO CEL and no other codes. I'm experiancing the classic poor gas mileage and poor power above 3k. No other obvious symptoms. I have a new knock sensor and the old "broken" one out of the car.
The old unit tests as follows.
No continuity
0.556 Mohm resistance
The new sensor tests as follows:
No Continuity
.0552 Mohm resistance

I had read that resistance values should be up around 10M ohm and that there should be continuity.

Did I miss something???

UPDATE!!!

Hello people! Meet Mr Stoopid!!

Ok..more numbers for you. Besides the values recorded above,
With your handy dandy multimeter a good sensor will show an AC voltage of about 3 millivolts at rest and jump to 16-23 millivolts when tapped (simulating engine knock) on the base with a metalic object.

My sensor is perfectly fine.

The harness that connects to it has a broken wire and missing contact... Go figure.
Stoopid needs to go back to the garage now....

OOps..spoke too soon...the connector and harness have only 1 connector at the sensor end and two at the other end...and the wire tests ok..

Now what?
Any thoughts folks?

Hey, I just checked my computer for codes and I also got hte 0304 code and no SES. How can I make sure that it is the knock sensor and not something else?

Try this thread...

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....hreadid=141435

I did some more testing and I posted the results here.
Bottom line.. If the CEL is NOT on, but you get the 0304 code, you can pretty well be sure that the sensor is cooked. I think before I would set up the test rig like I did, (see thread) I would loosen and retorque the bolt to spec 15-20 ft/lbs, check for corrosion while you are in there and at the intake manifold grounds, reset the ECU and see if 0304 comes back over the next week or so. If it does change the sensor.

So basically I need a new knock sensor.

I have to be 100% sure that it is the knock sensor. I can buy it for $110 if I order it today.

Is there anyone in NYC that can help me take a look at my Knock sensor and tell me if it is the problem or some other problem causing it?

If I were there I'd bring along my handy dandy KnockKnock sensor sensitivity tester!
To quote a bad line "I feel your pain!". I just went through this. From what you are saying ..its gotta be the sensor. Did you loosen then retorque the bolt? Did you do an ECU reset to see if it comes back?

I was dreading it was all 3 O2 sensors..now that would be a $400 ding in the budget!

A bad knock sensor can trigger the 02 errors though. Look out for that.

Re: Re: MY Rear 02 and Knock sensor MIL

Thanks.. Then I'll get the Knock Sensor first and see what happens..

I was wondering, when I read the codes for the MIL using the blinking MIL method does the first code mean it's the major problem and the 2nd code a result of the 1rst code or are they in just in numerical order?

Other way round... If the MIL was on and you got both the Rear O2 and Knock codes then replace the O2 first. Its likely that the failed O2 caused a momentary knock condition giving the 0304 code. After replacing the O2 and resetting the ECU, the 0304 likely won't come back unless the sensor is truly messed up too. It's unlikely that both went bad simultaneously. The 0304 can mean the ECU received a knock signal from the sensor when its working as it should, OR the ECU is telling you the sensor is funky.

As far as I know, the order the codes are displayed wouldn't be significant, and are likley in numerical order. Someone with a FSM could confirm this.
The only indicator of a Major problem, needing attention yesterday, would be the CEL flashing while you drive, instead of constantly lit.

the knock sensor or 0304 code will not turn on a CEL it just sits there dormant and yo uhave to run the codes in order to get it to show up. it was proly bad for a while and he just got the code now.

Have you checked the connections on the MAF and Intake temp sensors? It is really easy to damage the MAF sensor. Also, where did you put the intake temp sensor when you installed the intake. The MAF and intake temp. sensor are directly related to your install of the intake, the knock sensor is unrelated and a seperate issue.

The O2 is cheaper than the Knock Sensor I believe so I'll get that first. Thanks.
