TB Project

I have been researching a larger TB for the 4g Max, and it seems as if the 01+ Pathfinder 70mmunit will do the job. The TPS harness plugs fit and the throttle and cruise cables work also. I just had to get a custom adapter plate made and will need to port the intake manifold and the adapter plate by hand to open them up to as close to 70mm as possible. And may need to move the throttle and cruise cable mounting plate up a but because of the adapter plate thickness. I also ported my MAF sesnor a bit. My friend made me a 3" cross over pipe to replace the 2.5" one that cam with the kit. I should have it all on the car by next week end. I'm looking for more boost from volume, we shall see...

Its the smallest thing in the intake tract, so its a bottle neck. A larger one will allow more air past it.

I have Sungard Bronze 20% tint on the windows. The sunroof is 15% mirror tint.

Matt: how did you enlarge the MAF? How much HP do you think it can handle? I remember reading people using Mustang Cobra MAF's on their sentra's with 400 HP.

I just cut the bottlom leg of the center post using a hack saw blade and then ground it down with a dremel. I really dont know how many hp it will add, no more than ~3hp IMHO, but it al adds up. To use the cobra MAF I'd have to do a reprogramed ECU, I dont want some ones best guess ECU software.

Props for the R&D work you did, you should see some decent gains from this IMO. Do you know if the 2002 maxima TB is 70mm like the pathfinder's? And how are you going to port your intake manifold your self? I was thinking about trying to port mine myself, I did a little sanding in there

Just open up and port match the intake port and spacer to the 70mm TB, not the whole thing like extrude hoan. I will get some aluminum grinding bits for an industrial supply store and go to town. I bet the Max/Alty TB is also 70mm, but drive by wire.

Update

After some trial and error on the adapter plate I finally got it installed. It bolted up pretty good. I had to make a custom throttle cable bracket spacer to move the bracket forward 1" and some custom gaskets but it all works fine just fine! The TPS harness plugs are a squeeze but work. It's ideling a bit rough but the ECU may just need to adapt. I only had time to do just one WOT run, and my but dyno was very happy! I now need to bore out the intake manifold TB port and port match it all nice and smooth. I dont think I will be able to safely get the intake port open to the 70mm size of the TB maybe 67mm if I'm luckey.

hrmm... thanx for taking the bold step.. i remeber for hondas enlarging the tb gave 7hp to the wheel NA. i thot that was the best bang for the buck mod.. if all goes well with your tb mod then i mite do the same too.. i would definately be buggin' u about all that when that times comes tho..

Hey Matt I got a quick question. I noticed that a stock MAF has a plastic post on the top and the bottom of the actual sensor. It looks like you removed one of those. I guess the wire to the sensor runs through only one of them. Which one did you remove? I would assume that it is the one on the bottom of the MAF, since the electronics and connector sit on the top of the MAF. Also, do you think a simple polish job on the stock TB would do anything, or would it be a waste of time? ANy help would be appreciated.

I know I'm not Matt, but years ago I hand-polished the inside of my (stock) throttle body. The results was improved throttle response, especially when just barely pushing the accelerator. Max power was unchanged. The downside is that the car is touchier when I'm trying to granny the car in traffic. It's hard to drive the car smoothly in heavy traffic. Overall, I don't regret having done it but wouldn't do it again if I had the choice. I'd recommend you just leave it alone.

Thanks for the help. I have one more question though. Did you find any other throttle bodies that might fit the max? I saw where you asked about the Q45 one on their board, but its too big. The SR20DE has a 60mm throttle body stock, so I was thinking maybe its the same one, and a company makes a 65mm throttle body for that engine I believe. I know there will be very little gains from doing a TB on a N/A car, but I am looking for some little things to do to pick up a few more hp. I think I will port the MAF and maybe port the VI when it gets here before I put it on the car. I might get boost or nitrous one day, so it will help then anyway. Sorry for all these random thoughts, but I know you just researched it for your car, so you might know...Plus you are the man when it comes to mods.

That sounds good for the bottom, the thing on top is zinc plated and bell shaped with a hose going in the top of the TB, i see the three bolt holes and the hose connection on your TB but all that hooks to it is not there anymore. Was this on yours, it looks important? It also looks like it stops throttle from going to far fowards and closing to far?Isnt there a hole in the middle top of your TB,i think i see the hole there thats where the hose connects.I dont have a digital cam but i can get you pics if you think that will help you help me.thanks . Actually you have the two holes on top but the spot where my third hole is there is no hole on yours? And what did you do with the hose on the bottom of the max TB?thank you here is the vin for the TB if that means anything jn8dr07y31w520330
