blown fuse on aftermarket fogs
blown fuse on aftermarket fogs
First off, I did a lengthy search but couldn't find the answer I'm looking for.
I just installed a hella ff100 driving light system. I did everything to what hella scematics said to do except I hooked the fogs to my parking lights instead because I want them on all the time when my lights are on. I also put in PIAA 55W Xtreme Whites (same wattage)
I'll try and be as descriptive as possible to find out why I blew a fuse. I hooked everything up from the system. The power source is hooked right up to the (+) side of the battery and the other wire goes to ground. On the power source there is a fuse ( the one the blew after about 10 minutes on)
Now, I while back a rewired my OEM fogs to the parking lights and now with this system I hooked I also did the same. The fuse on my hella system blew but the fuse on the original system did not. Everything works on the car but the new lights. I haven't had a chance to get new fuses yet to see if it blows again.
My thoughts of how to fix it. Take the wire to ground and hook it up to the negative terminal of the battery. Check the wiring in the lamps for anything to short it out. I know I have power to the hella system because the indicator light is still on in the car.
Can anyone think of anything else I should check to determine my problem?
Anything that can help would be greatly appreciated!!! TIA,
Tom
on a side note, if anyone is interested in getting a set of fog/driving lights I would highly recommend these (hella ff100) they fit perfect in the valance area on my '99 SE. They were a bit tricky to install but the light output and beam is great (while they were lit)

Terminal 30--battery terminal (+) with a 15 amp inline fuse
Terminal 86--to power switch (toggle on/off switch)
Terminal 87--main power wire of fog lamps
Terminal 85--ground
Note: the other power terminal on toggle switch should be hooked up to the parking light output with a 2 amp inline fuse.
Installing this way will guarantee you're system will work. No power is being strained on the battery, nor the parking light circuit. I hope this helps, any. Good luck!
Re: Re: blown fuse on aftermarket fogs
There is a delay in admist the system. In thier diagram they show just as you said. I noticed the fuse is a 20A and I figure that should be correct. i'm not going to go anything higher.
Thanks for your help.

Bypass that whole setup and wire it up as follows. The reason why you're probably blowing fuses is because the whole set up is drawing too much power. Is it running with a relay? If not, I would install it this way. You will need a 30 amp relay and wire the fog wiring as follows:
Terminal 30--battery terminal (+) with a 15 amp inline fuse
Terminal 86--to power switch (toggle on/off switch)
Terminal 87--main power wire of fog lamps
Terminal 85--ground

I can't think of why your blowing fuses. Hellas kits are top notch units and the instructions are simple.

I rechecked the fuse and replaced it. Then I checked each of the lamps and wrapped electrical tape around all the exposed metal with in the lamp (connection and plugs). I put it all back together and it seemed to work great for about 20 minutes then it blew out on me again. I'm wondering since I have my OEM fogs hooked up to my parking lights also they might be over loading the system. (my hellas are hooked into the parking lights not the headlights or highbeams) But wouldn't that blow a fuse on the whole parking light system not just the hellas? That's the wierdest thing, just the hella fuse blows out. Can anyone give my any explaination to why these go out? I'm wondering if I have a short somewhere else I don't know about.
TIA
