About a month and a half ago I had the transvewrse link reacall done on my car. Shortly after werds I began to hear a snap(kinda bang) noise when I applied my brakes or if I hit a bump. A few weeks back the noise became noticably worse, I head it almost every time I hit the brakes. After I went to the track a few days ago the noise got even worse to the point I heard two seperate bangs. I became very concerned at that point so I jacked the car up today and looked things over. I began checking the TQ of all the transverse link bolts. And then I found this bolt Touqed to only 5 lb's rather then 156 lb's!(pic below)



It's the real big bolt closest to the camera.


It was praticaly finger tight and if that bolt went I beleive that whole side of the supension would have crumpled and I probably would have crashed. Thats not all though! The same bolt on the other transverse link was hand tight too! I was just racing at the track the other day and I did 130 MPH briefly on the highway with my car like this(First time ever over 110 BTW). If the bolt unscrewed it's self anymore I could have died form this..


I went to my dealer today and spoke to the owner about it. I presented him the pic and told him what was wrong. I told him I would let him hjandel rather then me report it to nissan. He thanked me for bringing this to his attention and he said very boldly :I am going to find who did this" and stormed away. So I am hoping the mechanic who did this gets fired or something becuase he is putting peoples live at risk with his carelessness.

OIhh BTW I of coursed re-tourqed teh bolts correctly and hte snapping noise is now gone.

damn that sucks... now how can u trust them to work on ur car ...
hope that guys who worked on ur car gets fired... b/c there is no excuse for that mistakes.. like u said it's could have been very dangerous....

This is why I always do all my repair work my self(except recalls of course). When ever I have someone else do it I always find something screwed up, always! This one takes the cake though..

Would one bolt on each side cause an accident? because there seems to be quite a few more. Kinda like the wheels, having 4/5 probably would not cause the wheel to separate. The mgr. did a good job, he didn't admit anything yet came across in a positive light as far as you were concerned. Many don't practice good customer service these days. Those who do differentiate themselves. The secret is that sometimes they don't have to even work any harder to look good in the customer's eyes--they just have to lose the defensive we're not liable read your contract attitude. Glad you didn't have any mishaps.

The bolt that was loose is the main bolt for the whole link, with out it I think things might crumble especialy when pushing the car hard.

yeah that mechanic should be fired

then ask for a set of HIDs for compensation for your near death experience.
well u fixed it..consider yourself lucky. if you didn't know cars..u would bring it back to the dealer..they will tighten it up..say something like..oh it was something rattling in the arm or something...u go oh ok..walk out and everyone is cool.

I was thinking the same thing, thats why I took the time to pin point the problem on my own

I wonder what day you had the work done, because I heard Mondays are bad, a good % of the staff is hungover. Friday is not good either, because they're getting ready to party. Then again I also heard you should never buy a Philly soft pretzel on a rainy day (no lie)--they somehow cannot bake them properly?? so the ones you buy are from yesterday, only hosed down and dried up. At least that's what I heard about the street vendors.

WOW ETHAN, IT'S stuff like this that will keep my from buying another nissan, i didn't have to go through it with my first one, 1. because ti didn't have as many problems as this one and i drove that one just as hard and with nitrous. 2. i didn't have to deal with nissan and warranty work.

i'd consider an Infiniti i really want to get a G35 coupe 6-spd. but i'm really really happy with the way my max does everything now. it handles off the hook. on my road, "the run" i'm not afraid to run any car on that road i could run it with my eyes closed. i did it again last night, around 3am when it was deserted and i think it was my best one ever. my brakes made me more confident, late braking, no fade. i prolly won't do it many more times though. i've found my limits and had my fun and it's time to start chilling out. i can't afford anything to happen to me or my car or for my insurance to go any higher.

I'm not going anywhere

dmbmaxima2k2, I think my 95 and 98 where put toghether a bit better but our 2002's are a hell of a lot nicer IMO.

ya i love my 2k2 more then my 95 but my 95 was hella older and it didn't rattle as much as my 2k2. for the abuse i put my 95 through and what you did to your 98 I30 they were hella good cars, i miss her sometimes but when i do i just go outside and look at Vin and he smiles as me and winks his corner lights and i remember why i pay out my **** every month for it and it's so worth it. plus you've seen my banner

Holy ****.. you're lucky you jacked it up

I had a bad vibration this weekend; I had asked my friend to balance my wheels on friday, and he just hired a new guy at his shop. I picked it up at the end of the day, and the whole front end is shaking like a ****...

... I was going crazy all weekend trying to figure out what it was, I didn't think it would be balancing - and go figure, I was right. The damn fool who took the wheels off had mounted them on the wrong side! YES, S-03's are directional.. ah well at least my safety wasn't that much at stake : I didn't drive too much this weekend - didn't get the chance to blow anything on the highway.. but I did almost smash into a wall when passing someone (s-03's suck when mounted on the wrong side lol).
