GL-5 in 97 Maxima SE
Hello,
I am in the process of replacing the clutch on a 1997 Maxima SE and I can not find manufactorer recommended GL-4 80w90 gear oil anywhere. All Nissan dealships and parts store tell me I can use GL-5 gear oil just fine. Some places have oil bottles with GL-3, Gl-4, Gl-5 written on them. I've read that GL-5 is a no no in Gl-4 designed tranny.
Where can I find GL-4 oil (I need it quick in Connecticut) or will GL-5 fluid work just fine?
Thanks

You can find GL-4 offered from redline ( www.redlineoil.com ), and also Amsoil. Both are comparable as far as their performance and quality goes.
GL-5 is a no-no.
I don't know about local distributors/auto parts stores...
edit: there's a redline dealer in Glastonbury, CT. Dunno how close that is to you. Cofiell's Sport & Power.

almost $8 a quart? does GL-4 stand for gold? Anyone has trouble finding GL-4 oil locally?
PS. Blizz, thanks. Yeah I called there. Unfortunately it's an hour away from home in opposite direction from work.
What about oil that meet all 3 criterias. Like 'Castrol Gl-3, Gl-4, Gl-5'. That should work, no? Otherwise everyone would be suing them for their broken trannies.
