ok.. VI/RPM switch help

Ok I am checking my VI to see what, if anything is not working.

The harlan RPM switch is perplexing me right now. The light comes on at my set RPM, but I am checking the voltage and it is going to .65 VDC

Before the light comes on it is at .85-.65 VDC

So I am kinda shaking my head right now.

How much voltage is supposed to be there?

I have not used a 30 amp relay.. I am just trying to see if it is working.

EVERYTHING else works.. except this.

ANY help would be great

AM I confused about the relay? Does everyone hook GND up tp the relay and use the RPM switch as a GND to the MAP/BARO switch with a constaint power source?

thanks

The GND prong on the relay should be connected to the switched ground from the rpm switch. The 12v wire from the Map/baro switch should be connected to the 12v out prong on the relay. I have a picture if you need it. PM your email address if you need it.

The Harlan is a switched ground meaning you should get an open circuit until the set rpm is reached, after which the white wire becomes ground (~0 VDC).

The relay serves to convert the switched harlan ground to a 12VDC line when activated. The other input to the solenoid is then ground.

As long as the harlan LED lights appropriately, go ahead and hook up your relay. You will be able to hear it click when the Harlan activates it and it may be simpler for you to measure the 12VDC that it puts out when activated.

Thanks guys. I DID NOT read everything closely enough.

I figured it out about 5 minutes after I posted..just got back from radio shack and the diagram on the back of the relay confirms what I just figured it out.

READ ALL DIRECTIONS.

I did not read all of the RPM switch direction therfore I did not fully understand what the heck I was doing. Buring my hand multiple times did not help.

Anyway thank you for the slap in the face and the help..

See ya in about an hour with a working VI

I hope you didn't fry the RPM switch because Harlan's directions specifically say not to use the RPM switch as a ground for a solenoid. This is why you must run a relay.
