Painting peices of car

Hi, I'm kinda new to maxima.org, but I want to start modding and stuff. I have a 91 maxima. The signal light "switch(little thing you pull down or up to put on signal, and on the end you twist to turn on lights) is really kind of fading. I'm goin to do the car in blue, so I want to spray it blue. What is the best way to make it long lasting? My friend did his protege in yellow, but around the steering wheel, where the keys go, it's really chipping. How should I paint it?
