Underdrive pully question
Underdrive pully question
Hey I have a question about the UDP. I know it's been discussed several thousand times, and I JUST GOT DONE SEARCHING FOR THIS. Anyway, my quesiton is this: I'm going to have to replace my belts soon enough. Supposedly my acc. belt has a crack in it and they're starting to whine so
My question is since I'm replacing the belts should I go ahead and get the UDP? Thanks.

"2/17/01 Well, i went over to Martin's house around 8:30 in the morning I got fed a bowl of Cream o' Wheat, and off we went. We removed the passenger side wheel, and removed the pulley/oil filter cover in the side of the wheel well. Stock pulley is HUGE!. Almost 1.5 times larger than the UR UDP. Well, as noted, the bolt to remove it was rusted, so this is the trick that we did. we put a HUGE 2 foot "breaker" bar and put it on the ground. We lowered the car down from the jack, until the handle touched the ground and wedged the handle to the ground.
So, with TWO cranks of the key, the pulley turned clockwise (subsequently keeping the bolt still via the breaker bar) and thus loosened the center bolt.
We jacked up the car and began loosening up the belts. We had a field service manual, which helped alot, there are acutally four bolts that we used to drop the two belts (the AC and Power Steering)
The most retarded thing is the belts are so close to the side of the car, that getting your hand and EVEN just a socket driver in that wedge of like 2 inches is nearly impossible. well. Thanks to my superior double jointed architecture, i did the impossible.
After dropping the pulley tension, we removed the stock belts, and pulled the stock underdrive pulley out. the stock is huge, and weighs close to 9 pounds. Martin removed the oil seal, and i lubed the replacement one that i got thru the Nissan dealership. I placed the seal back in, tapping ever-so lightly with a rubber mallet and put the UR in place, but not before putting the anti-seize on the inside.
The new Gates belts were a pain to put in. BE SURE TO STRETCH THE BELTS PRIOR TO INSTALL!!!!!!!!. The Power steering belt (the smaller one) was nearly impossible to put in. but through some good engineering by you know who, we slide the top portion on the belt onto the Power Steering pulley, then rotated the PS pulley until the belt slipped on. The AC belt was easy, and slid on.
here's the pain of it all. Martin's friend had a belt tension meter, which i needed to make sure the belts were to factory spec. but if you know anything at all about Los Angeles freeways, he was suppoed to travel from Culver City to Van Nuys, a simple 10 mile trip, but the moron took 2.5 hours to get there. So. what do you do, for 2.5 hours waiting, on the final step of the procedure? We changed Martin's brake pads on his Civic, i greased my calipers, and had lunch, and watched some TV. blech.
Well, the idiot finally showed up, and we wrapped up the install in less than 40 minutes after that.
Results? The engine revs alot faster now. NO POWER LOSS noticed. as for power steering, the steering wheel is a bit harder to push/turn over when the car is on, and not moving, but when the car is in motion, everything is normal.
I deem this mod: KICK ***! for 5 speed NA maximas.. as for autos, eh. i don't think you could benefit as much as a manual shifter, but it is just a piece of a puzzle in building a stronger, faster car. Every little thing helps."

? is that how you feel? LOL i dunno, i may *gasp* have a shop do it. i know i know im not a true man. thanks for the info cheston. since im auto, im kinda on the line considering it. i'll have to see how everything happens.
yeah
go ahead and do the UDP since you're changing the belt anyways. You will of course need smaller belts made by Gates, but they are really easy to come by. As for the install, I had so trouble loosening the AC belt, so I just paid my mechanic $50 to install it (it took about 10 minutes). As for gains, look at greg prete's dyno.

The horsepower gain...
...doesn't have that "Burst" or "Blast" that the Ypipe has.
You will notice that your engine will rev much smoother.
The pedal will feel much "lighter" almost like a feather from Idle to about 2800 rpms. The real "pull" will be felt on the highway or at WOT. Get it in Blue or Red. enjoy the ride
