How to redline an auto?

I have an auto, and i wanted to know if there was something you can adjust to make the auto shift at redline, instead of at 6K, without a tranny mod.

Manually shift I guess. Never tried that though.

I know for sure if you take it out of overdrive, you can redline 3rd gear. Pretty fun stuff...

Yes, you can...I do it on occasions. The only hard part is that you have to shift at about 300rpm before redline...it takes a second for the car to switch gears.

Leave it in park or neutral and floor it to your heart's content.

manually shifting kills your tranny - but if u want to - just bring it all the way down to 1 then to 2, etc

That's why I only do it on occasions. I wanted to figure out when exactly to shift to get it to redline. In a way, it was more of an experiment, but yes, I do know that it can kill the tranny.

? I think only the 2-1 downshift is bad in auto.

another solution is get a red marker & extend the redline from 6700rpm to 6000rpm then u can redline it everytime & leave it in D !

I'm still not quite sure why this would be the case. I figured, since the transmission actually thinks before actually upshifting even when you told it to do so a second earlier then there's not much of a difference than just leaving the shifter at 3 or D. Either way, the ECU will dictate the actual shift.

Now as far as redlining it, keeping it in 3 will make it redline all preceeding gears.

How does manually shifting kill your tranny? All you are doing is telling the computer when to shift.

ok to redline you have to put it in first. then wait till the neddle gets to exactly 6ks then shift to 2nd. it takes a second for it to shift, so it will shift at redline if you do it at 6k.

Hmm, downshifting to 3rd when cruising at highway speeds (e.g. 70mph) by stepping on the gas more is not much different than sliding the shifter to 3. I've never tried going down to 2 but i'm assuming that won't happen otherwise the tranny would do it already just by stepping on it.

If you were to do it, I do it on the occasional rice run, shift into 1st (way bottom), power brake to about 2000 rpms...floor it...ride it till about 4,000 rpm shift up to drive (D) hammer till about 5k, shift down to 2nd and finish. Defintly kills tranny quickly though. Im never going to do it again

well... putting it in "3" which there is no such thing from what I have in my max is not the same as flooring it into 3rd. If i was to go ahead and floor it at 45MPH so that it downshifts to 2nd from 3rd or 4th is not the same as slamming the tranny to 2nd yourself. When you your flooring it the tranny has full control and eases the downshifts, you pulling the shifter really forces it down..

so starting at 1 and shifting up isn't bad at all for your tranny?

No.

And the best gear to redline is 3rd:

I have a 2k2 so i have 3.

I understand what you're trying to say however. Though i'm still curious, how exactly does the tranny "ease" the downshift? Isn't a downshift a downshift?

ease as in, it knows its going to happen so it disengages the 'clutch', what your doing is just popping it down.. For example, if you are driving your 5spd, and you decided let me just drop the gear without clutching out, what would happen?

I'm familar with how it works on a manual tranny equipped vehicle, though with proper timing/matching one can forego the clutch w/o much grinding.

Anyway, i'm just under the impression that if the auto tranny "thinks" before following a command to upshift that it would tend to follow the same process when downshifting. And if this were to be the case then it should be able to "ease" into it.
