While cleaning my grounds, I realized my 96 Max has the stock battery!!!!

With all this talk about clean grounds on our cars, I decided to inspect and clean my grounds tonight. My battery terminals were pretty clean (as they always been), but I sanded them a bit to shine them up. As I was removing my battery to clean my engine ground and chassis ground, I was flat out amazed to see that my battery says "Hitachi made for Nissan" build date 6/95!! Holy crap it's the factory battery!! This battery is over 7 years old, has 87K miles on it, and been through 7 cold winters and 7 hot summers in Kansas City. I also noticed that there was barely any water in the battery. The liquid level was 3/4" BELOW the "low" level. I need to get some distilled water ASAP. This battery has never given me an once of trouble and it stills looks brand new.

As for power difference after cleaning the grounds, I did notice something interesting. My car starts off smoother in 1st and the jerk I always get going in 2nd at part throttle is mostly gone We'll see how long it lasts. As for power gains, I really can't tell because the roads are slightly wet and I can spin the tires from a roll at 40mph if I wanted (I don't want to). Like the others, I recommend cleaning your grounds. My engine ground was in really bad shape and the chassis ground was questionable.

My OEM nissan battery is in the 1990 Toyota Camry thats now the family beater car. I should check the level on it, it is probably bone dry.

I still have my stock Nissan battery in my 95. It's still going strong.

I regret getting rid of my OEM battery in late 99. It lasted 5 years (would have been longer, I replaced it when I really needed a new starter). The Exide I replaced it with didnt even last 3 years.

On a side note, why the hell coudldnt Nissan put a maintenance free battery in it's new cars in the 90's?

Well if you all ever have to replace the battery, check out the Sears Diehard Gold. Comes with a good warranty also.

That's what I'm running now in my 95, the guy I bought the car from replaced it less than 2 months before he sold it for whatever reason.

On wet roads I can spin the tires at will up to 40 MPH easy. In fact when I am trying to pull into fast moving traffic on a wet road I have to be very careful not to accidently spin the tires. My tires are in good condition.

This sounds like another endorsement for the hyper ground system or ooglie equivilent. Of course it is possible by improving the ground we are simply bringing it back up to new factory spec. I may try to improve my connection on the positive terminal also.

Dave, have you tried to add any extra ground wires or replace factory ground wires?

That's what I'm running. Very good and reliable battery. Hardly causes any drainage in the cells. I pound my stereo everytime the Max is driven. On another note, I'm still on my stock alternator....and it's 8 years old!!! I have a new one waiting whenever this on dies.

And the 2k2's for that matter. I was shocked to find a non-sealed battery under my hood.
