I want to sell my Max

I Have never sold a car before and want to know the easiest and hassle-free way to do it. If it matters, I live in Maryland.

I used autotrader.com, got replies quickly and didn't have much trouble.

Stefnee,

I also live in Maryland, and there are several ways to sell your car.
Each one is a bit better than the other ones, depending on what kind of condition your car is in (year, mileage, state inspection), how fast you want to rid of it, and the price you want for it. Classifieds, public auctions, dealer auctions, dealerships, internet advertising, are the main ways.

Check my email for more info.

Try to sell it on the Forum, you have 15,000 Maxima enthusiasts that might buy it or know someone that is looking for one!

Another thing you might want to consider is giving the car to charity, you get a tax-break when you do so. NOT!

But seriously, you should consider selling it to a relative that needs a car. No matter what year Maxima we're talking about, the seller gets hit on the head with a sledgehammer as far as depreciation goes. But if you sell it to a relative, what you lost in depreciation is your relative's gain, so in a way you didn't lose the money, you helped-out your blood. Otherwise a total stranger benefits from your loss. Just an idea.

anyway. use autotrader.. ebay or local papers.. but no matter which one you choose.. you will have to deal with people for at least 20 mins while they test drive the car and look it over.. or you could just trade it in for soemthing else and not go through all that

I would place an ad in the newspaper.

My dad sold his Tacoma that way. He sold it 2 weeks later after he put the ad in. He kind of wishes he had the price higher

If you are considering trading it in you might want to take it to carmax they give you a lot more than most other dealers.

true, but if your vehicle doesnt fit their criteria-year and mileage, they cant put it on their lot, so they wont give you anything for it. Using classifieds is very time-consuming. People may call you day and night, and you gotta make yourself available. If you have a family, this one is really tough. As STEFNEE said, it is a pain in the patootie to sell a car. You take it to the dealer and get raped in major way. Choose or loose.

Thanks......

I'll be out of country for a couple of weeks, but when I get back I will look into autotrader.com and advertise it here also. I'm almost in a win/win situation....

I know I will not get what I owe on it, unless someone is extremely desperate, but I get the 01 AE as a hand me down :-)

I also live in MD, I'd suggest placing the ad in either the Washington Post or the Baltimore Sun, depending on which part of MD you live in.

Putting your ad in either of those will also automatically put u'r ad in cars.com

If that dosen't work go to autotrader.com from what i've noticed you find more private sellers in the newspapers/cars.com and more dealers on autotrader.

I suggest the paper first as not all u'r perspective buyers will be tech savy.

I worked at Carmax, and they do give fair prices on cars. If your car is in good shape it will end up on the lot, and if not it goes to auction. The most important thing is NOT to have mods on the car. If everything is stock the more factory options the better.

they may take it to the auction, but they will still give you less than what you can get for it otherwise. I know how this system works. Either they have an outside wholesaler or internal auction guy. There are expenses associated with listing each car at the auction, you gotta pay at least 100 bucks to list you car on it. This fee includes reconditioning, registration, etc. If you wont sell the car in one day, they will charge you again to relist. I am not even mentioning the cost to transport the vehicle to the auction, storage fees, licensing fees, insurance. There's plenty of overhead so dont think you are getting the most at carmax, or they would've went out of business.

Obviously it's a business, but the point is Carmax does offer some good prices at times.

FYI Carmax has internal transports as well as contract transports. Cars are always shipped to the recon location, and Carmax conducts their own auctions. Almost everything is internal including transport, auction, recon, registration, etc. Thus, there's no listing fees or storage fees.

I can't believe this thread is still going. Sell the car in the classifieds section or through some other means, stop advertising it in the general forum already.

I would be cautious about selling your car to a friend/relative because he/she may hold you responsible for car problems. Now, if you give the person the car for free, that's a different story.

what was the point of your response? I can tell you even more. Carmax has not only own transport, but has own in-house auction guys that take cars down to the auction. They also have "group sell" arrangements with auctions, but they STILL have overhead on every car they get. It takes $$$$ to buy the transporter truck, pay the driver, gas, insurance, maintenance of the truck, set up network with DMV, pay on-site clerks to process the transaction. As I mentioned earlier, CarMax will still incur auction fees, they dont own any auctions

To all the smart-*** ***** who are whoring up this post, get a life! A person has never sold a car and is asking for advice, respect that!

You will support people saying "use the search," but because apparently it's a girl n00b you don't mind? There is a forum for "FOR SALE," it's called CLASSIFIEDS. Ask your family, not the general discussion on a maxima forum. The person obviously wanted to get people here to buy it.

Now that I am back....

1) The person here (me) wanted info on the easiest/hassle free way to sell my car. 2) Asking family is fine, but not everyones family has experience in selling cars therefore, go to the "friendly" forum where I can get some insight. 3) What difference make it does, yes difference make it does whether I'm male or female, you don't need to respond if you have no advice or insight to offer and why get mad I someone other than yourself asks a question that you know the answer to?

Stefnee, I think we gave you as much advice as possible on selling your car by yourself. If you dont want to burden your family-fine, if you don't want to spend your own time, that's OK. If you do not want to sell it to the dealer for immediate cash, that is fine, too. I told you that I can help you sell your car to benefit us both. Email me if interested.
