Pep boys sells dust boots of various colors, exactly like the ones you got from summitracing, for about the same price...
So your options are either to get KYB dust boots and use the shortened bump stop or buy these cheap ones and cut the stock bump stock? Is this correct?

the KYB and OEM boots have bumpstops built in, i guess you could get the cheaper boots, and rip out the bump stop from the OEM piece, shorten it, and throw it in there, I dont know. When i did my suspension, my OEM boots with 50k on them, were completely shot, and the bump stop's looked cracked, so there was no way I was going to reuse them...

Bump stops & Boots

A couple of questions (bare with me):

(1) Are dust boots really necessary?

(2) Where are the stock bump stops? Are they attached to the upper bearing mounts?

Thanks for your replies.

I see what you guys are talking about with the built in Bumpstops. Heck be creative like the "Monster Garage people and save some money". Enough of that. If you want to pay $64 for the ones with built bump stop, go ahead. As you can see I ordered me some yella ones that I will install, bumpstops or not I dont care I put a bumpstop in there by cuttin on it off the stock one hide it on the bottom cover it make it look purdy and I am done and saved $30 towards my ME VI. <--- Thats how he gets his mods

This thread is OLD AS HELL, but I am bumping it to ask where one might anchor those dustboots at the TOP of the assembly.

I am also wondering whether these boots fit front and rear.

Jay, any input?

I use those Rancho boots from Summit, $35 or so for 4 boots. They fit very well with Tokico Illuminas front and rear. The boots don't have bump stop so I reuse the Nissan stock bump stop. The material seems to be of high quality, thick, strong, and flexible.

How did you fasten those to the stock bumpstops? I see how they attach to the strut body, but I am confused @ the top...

You don't fasten the boots to anything up top. Just a zip tie on the bottom. They sort of hang up on the strut or rear shock piston. If they creap down the strut/shock will simply push them back up on the next large bump. I've had my KYB's on for almost 3 years and they are still hanging on nicely up top and show no signs of cracking or splitting.

I don't mean using the KYB boots, I mean the Rancho boots. Are they of the same design? It is hard to tell from the pics on Summit.

Welcome to 2 years ago, lol.

I don't use any dust boots. I stopped using them when I had my lifted 97 Jeep Wrangler. When we'd go through rivers and deep mud holes, water & junk would still get inside the boots through the little holes in the boots. After seeing this I removed them and haven't used them since. I had Rancho RS9000 shocks that were remote controlled from inside the cabin. If it was okay for them, I think my ricey Illuminas are fine without them. Many offroaders I talked to at the time didn't use boots either and never had a problem with damaging the piston.

But that's just me.

Flame on!

Zip tied at the bottom. The top of the boot just pulled over the bump stop. I use a knife to trim the bump stop so it goes through the boot opening. I also cut a few rings from the new boots to make them shorter.

I am RIGHT THERE WITH YOU, but there is a small part of me that thinks that they had to be there for a reason. No high-articulation 4x4 system uses them, and most mudders and trail rigs leave them off for the exact reason that you mentioned.

im right there with ya, my first vehicle was a 94 wrangler on 35's, oh how i miss that jeep sometimes, sigh, but yea, i had the rs9000's and those ugly a$$ boots had to come off. and through all the hard trail riding, creek/river crossin, and muddin, never had a single problem with the suspension.................just mainly a lot of drivetrain problems, but oh well it was worth it.

and yea, this thread is from way back when

HAHA too funny, everytime I go to VIP and look at the Rancho boots I wondered if they fit.

You need the boots because if your piston gets nicked say to the oil (or gas) inside the strut. this will make your strut wear out quick. dont cheap, out get some boots.

It is not cheaping out. It is the fact that trapping moisture or dirt INSIDE of the boot is just as bad as- or worse than- no boot at all.

This is an old thread. If my typing is messed up, please excuse me, I am typing out of a broken laptop since I am not at home in America. The purpose of this post is to inform some of the guys that have low drops and dont have enough money to purchase some boots, you can go this route. The rear stock nissan boots come with bump stops. You guys can be creative and cut one of your old ones out and reuse them again. The front stock nissan boots have a big orange insert inside the boot, you can reuse that bumpstop if it is not dry rotted. Nissan is now making new dust boots where the front boots have built in bumpstops like the rear ones. I guess it is cheaper to produce them like that or make more money off the customer. Price for one stock nissan rear boot $17.00(if not more) dollars plus tax not cheap for a high school kid.
