What's the difference between a Y-Pipe and a DOWN-Pipe?

Just curious. I have never heard the term Y-Pipe used on any car other than the Maxima. It seems like all the Supra, ZX, etc guys call it a 'DownPipe'. Same thing, different name or different things?

A y pipe will be found any tranversely mounted V-6 engine in a fwd application except for the domestic V-6 as they sometimes have a pipe that goes above the tranny connecting to the rear bank but it does effectively the same thing. A downpipe is usually a cast piece when stock with many containing a cat. A aftermarket downpipe will be better flowing and sans cat.

I seriously have always been told and said that the down-pipes are the vertical sections of the y-pipe. You say front down-pipe or rear down-pipe to signify different parts of the y-pipe instead of saying <redneck voice> "That long pipe right over there sticking up towards the engine" </redneck voice>.....

a down pipe is a pipe that exhaust gases from a turbo goes out to the muffler..

y pipe / h pipe / headers / is the pipe that comes from the engine to the exhaust pipe.. i said headers because on honda's our y pipe setup for them is apart of their headers..

it can get confusing.. because on my maxima.. my y pipe and my down pipe is different..

Y pipe is for V6. downpipe would be for Inline six or 4. Ypipe has two inlets going into one. Downpipe is a single pipe straight from the turbo.
