DYNO COMPARISON - 02 Maxima 6MT vs 02 Mustang GT 5MT
Well those 02 6spd's are fast, but are they fast enough to beat a Mustang GT 5spd (260HP)?
I did some digging at www.corral.net and the general consensus is that 99+ GT 5spds put down an average of 230 rwhp and 270 rwtq. The closest dyno chart I could find to that standard was actually a Bullitt Mustang DYNO, so that's the one I used. It looks as though Ford is under-rating the SOHC 4.6 a bit to separate it from the pre-03 Cobra's, as 230/260 is only 12% drivetrain loss. It looks like they're really good for about 275 bhp so. For the Maxima I used the stock dyno they did at NissanPerformanceMag which I have archived on my site HERE
So after I dumped the data into Excel, this is what we get...
I had to normalize the RPM scales once again because the VQ goes to 6600 and the 4.6 goes to only 6000rpm. The 4.6 actually peaks at 4800rpm (80%) and then drops off after that vs the VQ35 which seems to stay relatively flat all the way up to redline almost. So the GT motor has less up top than the advertised 5200rpm power peak would lead you to believe. That engine seems to be strongest between 3000-5000rpm.
Now check this out... Curb weight of a 2k2 6spd is listed as 3224lb, and for a Mustang GT 5spd its 3317. Dividing out the weight to get the power to weight ratios gives us this...
OMG...the Maxima and the Mustang are DEAD EVEN in terms of wheel horsepower to weight in the top 10% of the rev range!
So a Maxima may not get a Stang in the 1/4 mile, nor in lower speed races (assuming equal drivers), but when you're dragging on the highway up to higher speeds, all that really matters is what's in that top 10% of your rev band. So a Maxima very well could top-end a Mustang GT! Now consider two things...
Aerodynamic Drag
Maxima: 0.32 Cd <== ADVANTAGE
Mustang: 0.34 Cd
Drag becomes the ultimate limiting factor, so the less of it you have, the better. The Maxima will be a good bit slippier at higher speeds so the advantage goes to the Max.
Gearing
Maxima: 6spd close ratio <== ADVANTAGE
Mustang: 5spd wider ratio
Above 100mph the Mustang has to shift into 4th gear, which then takes it up to about 140mph. Above that, 5th gear is an extremely tall mainly fuel economy gear which will pull very slowly up to about 149 mph or so.
The Maxima on the otherhand has TWO highway power gears. 4th will take it to about 120 mph, and 5th will take it to around 150mph. It doesn't need to use 6th at all to hit top speed. So above 140 a Maxima will be pulling hard in 5th, whereas a Mustang will be lugging in its econo 5th gear struggling to accelerate.

6 speed maximas have pretty good top end... i was racing a 4 door M3 the other night, a 97 or so.. i would pull a few cars on him to about 120, then bring it down to about 100 to let him catch up, then stomp on him again. i was pretty amazed, i didnt think i would beat him by the amount that i did.. maybe it was auto? or manual but he didnt know how to drive? i just found it interesting that you posted about the top end, considering my run the other night

I am with Brian. Any way you could find a STOCK VE dyno? not one of the ones from this forum, cause the only 2 posted were laying down some shiety numbers. If you are truely the master, you would be able to research and find the STOCK VE numbers

Just wanted to say thanks for this and all your dyno comparisons. I sent the link of the VQ30 vs H22A to my brother. He owns a 94 accord and thinks if and when he does an H22A swap he will spank me.

I cannot pull up the dyno on the Maxima you have noted. It says Forbddien. If I ratio the weights to the 230 hp that the Mustang pulled then the Maxima must pull 223.5 to equal. I pulled 194.1 peak hp on my stock 2K2 Maxima. I'm afraid that is quite away from the Mustang.

I noticed that you used the BULLIT stang dyno for the comparison. There's one problem with this....The Bullit may only make 5hp on paper...but the real secret to why the Bullits are faster is they have a MUCH better power curve throughout the entire rev range. The normal GTs won't put down those numbers.
I've run several 99+ GTs in my bolt-on 4th gen...all BEFORE my MEVI
one was a 40 roll....pulled a half car to 90 on him
on was a highway roll pulled about 1.5 cars on him
Both were 5-speeds....I want to see how bad I smoke them with the VI now
