how to prevent/deter theft....?

heres the problem...i go to Univeristy of the Pacific in Stockton, CA...which has one of the highest crime/murder rates or whatever in CA...this campus itself isnt bad, but lately a lotta ppls systems [subs, amps, HUs, cds] have been getting stolen, and theyve all had alarms...what im wondering is, is there anything i can do to prevent/deter this from happening to me...we dont have too many fixed up cars around here so comparatively , im high profile and i havent been hit yet...i was talking to this guy from a class who got jacked, he had a civic w/ an alarm and nothing really showy and never bumped it around campus...my car is showy, i do bump it, and i DONT have an alarm...now already im gonna turn it down when im on campus, and hopefully get an alarm system installed when i get back down south [which is like 2 days]...but what can i do besides that to avoid getting jacked...we dont have very many "good" parking spots [places that are highly visible] and i have to park behind buldings where most ppl park....what can i do..i feel extrememly helpless right now

All I can suggest is park where it is well lit and close to buildings where it is going to be visible. Hope your car stays safe!

Yeah, they broke into my car 15 feet or less from my apartment... Anyway, get an alarm first thing, with starter kill, a backup battery, an internal siren, and make sure it has some visable LED's, second, disconnect the quick release for your trunk, and only use your remote or key to open it, that way they have a harder time getting to access to your trunk, third, always remove your faceplate, fourth, don't leave anything inside your car visible that looks worth steeling, don't 'bump' in your neihborhood, don't let anyone know what you have, sometimes your friends may even talk to the wrong person, you can also look into getting a hood lock, a hidden kill switch, bolt everything down really well to make it even harder to remove, I'm sure you'll think of some more....

Your location sounds pretty bad. Why go to school where the murder rate is noteworthy?

There's nothing that can prevent theft, because there's something called the flatbed. My friend's car was alarmed to the hilt, clubbed, ignition killed, brake pedal locked, and his car was taken. His location in Phila. didn't help, either. There's an old saying, I think it says to be aware of your surrounding. Good luck, but if possible get out of that area.

I dont know how to prevent break ins, but take out your fuel pump fuse so your car will die in 5 sec w/o it. Dont forget to put it back in when you drive it.

Unfortunately there is not much you can do. If someone wants your car bad enough, they will get it. Stay parked in the well lit areas and hope for the best. Good Luck!

I was gonna say pull your fuel pump fuse too, but park in front of the department of safety or whatever the call the campus police there, we usually have a few nicely modded or expensive cars parked in front of the station here at umass.

I'm not sure of your financial situation, but I had a friend who rented a parking spot when we were in school. He had a similar problem to you, so he read the paper and found a private residence close to school and paid them something (like $50/month) to park at their house. It was either that or park about a mile from campus in the commuter lot...NOT safe for attractive cars.

yo son, you have a hooked up 5th gen without an aftermarket alarm?!

i should go over there and ****** that car! This is what you do, there will be times that you won't hear your alarm EVEN if it goes off, yes a kill switch and all that yaddy yadda will make it harder for a thief to steal your car, and make him work longer but if there is no one out there to realize what's going on, what's the point. Time is all he needs and as long as you DO NOT know he's trying to steal your car, an alarm does nothing for you.

I did what i think you should also do, get a pager. With a pager, as long as your in distance of frequency, you will know whatever is happening to your car. Whether something is left open when trying to lock or someone is trying to break into your car, you will get the signal from the alarm going off and even if no one is out there to warn u, you have the alarm to do it for you and you can run out there with your slugger and make him think twice about robbing u again...this will prevent from your car getting stolen and depending on how easy access your mods are, can prevent from them being stolen as well....

Don (pearl96max) sells a viper responder 790 which i have and has done me well...he's in new jersey, i recommend going to him and getting this installed. Protect your investment, the three most important things in life are food/water, shelter, and security...going without an alarm is violating the creed to live

i hope my words, left some stains on your brain

I would suggest just calling the police when your pager goes off. More and more people are going out to their car cause of the pager and getting flat out car jacked because someone was hiding out of sight.

hey thanks for all the replies guys...that is basically why i havent got one yet...all the cars that have been jacked so far HAVE had alarms on em and that did nothing...and till now, ive always had my car in relatively good neighborhoods and garaged so did i need one? not really...and living in socal, i only got looks cuz ppl couldnt figure out what i was driving....but im gonna have to get one now and yea its gonna hve the pager...and im also gonna pay a lil more but have my car moved closer to my building, to the point where i can see it out my window...those 2 combined i should be ok...another thing, how sensitive do you guys place your alarms...practically eevrybody around here has subs and i dont want my alarm going off everything they drive by
thanks again

I thought there were plenty. Off the top of my head my doc said her son was going to RPI/Albany Med and finishing a MD in 6. I went out with a girl in '99 who graduated Harvard Dental. Interesting she has a MD title. She told me it's no different than DDS, just that her school awards the MD. I guess it's like the JD which is really equiv to a masters even though it's a "doctor" of jurisprudence. Then you got the llb (bachelor of laws) which is the same as JD. LLM and LLD are considered graduate law. Johnny Cochroach got either?? I love education but sometimes it's time to show me the money!
