Electrical know how people...i need you

hehe, gay subject line eh? anyways, here is waht i want to do...i want to make a mini rpm bar out of led's, and i want to incorporate one of the led's to be the shift light. So, im guessing the space i have to work in is about 2.5-3". If i get small enough LED's, i'll probably get 5-6 of them in there. Now how would i get the led's to mirror the guage...example one led would equal 1500rpm and hopefully it would light up, and so on for the other LED's. What would i need to make this work?
thanks, harry.

Speed sensor signals are pulses. Nissan meters typically have a 2p and/or an 8p (p = pulse) output.

I'm thinking a small microprocessor would be nice (go fish for a MC68HC11 chip, most colleges use it), learn some simple assembly program some software to read the pulses. By software program, you can then use the built-in outputs to turn on the LEDs as the count increases.

It would need some experimenting with to get the timing right. If I have the time next week, I will check out the Maxima speed sensor output curve.

Edit: I'm sure there are other ways, I'm just not creative enough though ... you'll probably have to start with the speed sensor signal so I will check that out next week and let you know.

Bummer, I can't read ... I thought you were trying to make a LED bar for your RPM ... my mistake.

I'll still check it out, good luck though
