Y-pipe leak

I think I've found a small leak. Where the Y-pipe connects to the cat. I put a peice of thin paper under and felt a little air creeping through . Even when driving, I could hear it coming from the center of the car. Just making sure this is a leak before I take it to the shop. Thanks.

Theres a reusable multi-layered metal gasket down there. Make sure that there isnt a huge amount of buildup on the cat or the Y pipe flange. Also see if the cat bolts/nuts are tight. Try to do it youself first if you're even remotely mechanically inclined.

Did you change the gasket when installing the new pipe?

I have been haing the same problem and a shop said the only way to fix it was to weld the pipe to the cat.

What kind of Y-pipe is it?

As Canuck has asked, what kind of Y-pipe is it? Did you just have it installed or have you had it for a while and just began to happen? One more question...are you in so cal around the l.a. area by any chance?

A little update. I went to a local shop, and they found a huge leak. It turns out that the flanges weren't matching up, or atleast thats what the mechanic said. I told him to just put a new gasket, but he said it'll just get blown out. So I had them install a Catco high flow cat. No more noise, or leak. And now I notice the performance gain from the y-pipe. It's great.

Glad to hear that it's all good...

How much was the cat? and what gen. max do you have? I just wanted to know if you were close by in case you didn't get it fixed so i can hear the noise. I have a "whizzing" noise on my stillen y-pipe and i hear that it's normal for it to do that... this is after i installed it 3 times trying to figure out what it was.

The cat installed was 140. I'm guessing it was around 70-80 bucks. I have a 97. The sound was hard to explain. When I heard it most was when I'd drive past a car, or wall etc...you could hear a buzzing/air sound. It was annoying. And now it's gone.

Now I'm wondering if mine's having the same issue?

Thats the EXACT sound I have. When I drive next to a wall or car I hear a hiss or just the car boucing off the object. I've had it since day one, so maybe I've always had a slight leak with my Crapman, or maybe its the flex. Whatever it is, it has gotten worse in the last couple weeks. I'm debating between a new warpspeed one or just have a shop build me one(probably just as good).

Have you guys checked for leaks? I don't think there should be any noise coming from the y-pipe its self. Have someone cover your exhaust hole while you get under the car (or as close as you can) and listen for any leaks. Or jack the car up and feel around for any....a piece of thin paper helps. In my case there was a obvious leak between the cat and the pipe.
