The final straw- repair and parts prices

I got the repair bill for the transmission today. I had a $200 off coupon and before the coupon it came to $1050 to rebuild my manual transmission. So after the coupon its about $800. Completely ridiculous. And this is for a bench job too cause I pulled the transmission myself. I guess the good news it has a 12 month 12k mile warranty but screw it I'm tossin the car. I had to call them up again and tell them to open it back up to pull the Quaife differential out of it. The good news also is also the rebuilder examined how I rebuilt it the last time and he said that there was nothing wrong with the way I did it.

Oh yeah I had to go to the dealers today to get a rear main seal and a few other seals. The cheapest seal that was a little O ring was $5! I also checked the price on a vaccuum cut valve that was making noise on me. It was $93! Good lord. I hate the expensive prices for these import cars and its not like this car is an exotic either. That's it, I'm through. I've had this car for 2.5 years and it is definately time to move on. I'll reclaim what little resale value of the car I can get. Look for a Y pipe, Quaife, Momo wheels, Addco RSB, intake, FTSB, B pipe, Sprint Springs, AGX shocks to go on ebay pretty soon.

Eric, why not rebuild it again yourself? I thought you would do that to save some $? Especially when you wanted to save $? Anyhoo. I guess it's domestics for you because that's the only thing that has cheaper part prices. And did you buy your parts from the local Nissan dealer? Those guys always rape you on prices man.

Yeah but I'm real busy with school at the moment, so my parents told me to send it away. So I met them 1/2 way, I pulled the tranny and sent the tranny to a shop. And, the shop would provide warranty which I could not. Also I wanted to make sure my tranny rebuilding skills was not bad- and I was told I did nothing wrong in rebuilding it the last time. And I was out of transmission parts to rebuild with.

Of course the dealers will charge an arm and a leg but where else can I get a rear main seal, the 1/2 moon upper oil pan seals, the crankshaft seals from? Courtesy is out cause they already P.O'd me. I just blue booked my car and its worth a paltry $9750 private party. I'd be lucky to get $10k out of this. Its time to move on.

I'm actually doing the same thing as Eric now. Once my 800-1000 worth of repairs is done, my car is for sale. Half of my mods are already sold.

Jumping ship huh? I remember you talking about how you wanted to pull the engine to do a full build up that time we were changing Vinipux's clutch. Guess that idea is dead huh?

Yeah, I had already started getting stuff ready for the engine build up too. I've decided to go the all wheel drive turbo route. I have a big hill for a driveway and its impossible to get up in the maxima with snow on it, not to mention just driving around normally in the snow.

Eric, yes please get rid of the car. You have been complaining about your car forever. I'm surprised you kept the car this long.

Get a Toyota or Lexus. Nissan do not make the best Japanese cars.

I'm not saying Nissan is the best, but they are near the top. JD Power & Associates ranks the 95-99 Maxima as best in it's class in reliability (better than the Camry/Accord) and Nissan has worked it's way into the top 10 automakers in terms of reliability. Take a look at consumer reports and you'll see that the overall rating of the 95-99 Maxima is better than both the Camry/Accord.

Eric's case is pretty isolated. Most of us 4th geners have had minimal or no problems. People expect our 4-7 year-old cars to be bulletproof. It's just not possible, especially if you beat on it. No car can take constant punishment. The VQ engine is extremely stout, but trannies and suspension are going to take most of the abuse. I get SICK and TIRED of listening to people ***** and moan about having to replace O2 sensors, clutches, alternators, water pumps, syncros, suspension, etc. These are WEAR and TEAR items. If you beat on them constantly, they'll wear out faster. If having to spend the money in repairs really bothers you then maybe you shouldn't be modifiying your car or racing it? It doesn't matter if you're on Maxima.org, CamaroZ28.org, Corral.net, CL-S.org, ClubLexus.org, you'll see that all cars will eventually have parts that fail if you beat on them long enough.

If Eric and the other guys that are dumping their Maximas honestly believe any other make can take more abuse, they're sadly mistaken. I suggest reading up on any car you might be interested in. I've been doing this for 2 years now and IMO, the Maxima is going to be VERY hard to part with because many of our problems are so minimal compared to other fellow gearheads with different makes.

Cool cars that I won't be buying because of reliability:

95-99 BMW M3: engine failures = $7000-8000, electrical gremlins
94-96 Impala SS: too much to list
96-98 Cobra: questionable engine relibility
99-02 Mustang GT/Bullit: Inconsistent dyno power
LS1 F-Body: major QC problems, tranny problems, strange oil issues
CL-S/TL-S: tranny problems, general QC problems
02-03 Maxima: general QC problems, 6 speed problems
RX7 TT: engine fires, seal problems, QC problems
Talon/Eclipse: major QC problems, crank problems, generally medicore
F-150 SC Lightning: tranny, IC, ignition problems

I know the 95-99 M3's have a lot of electrical problems, but I thought it was the 2000+ M3's that are having a BIG problem with engine failures...
