ignition key alignment

I have to lift the key on my 95 maxima in order for the ignition to work. Is there an adjustment that can be made inside the steering column?

You are saying that you have to lift the key once it is in the ignition for it to be able to be turned to turn on the car? It sounds like your key may be wearing out, meaning, the grooves on the key are starting to wear down. Do you have a spare that you could copy from? Also, does it do this with a spare?

You probably need a new lock cylinder. The tumblers get worn down.

Both keys turn fine but do not activate the ignition unless I lift the key. I agree with kramerica72, I probably need a new lock cylinder. Is this a do it yourself job?

You may be able to do it yourself if you have a little mechanical know-how. I am not sure if Nissan locks have a shear screw or a pin holding in the cylinder. If you do try it yourself, check the actual ignition switch in the steering column first--you will find it at the end of the lock cylinder. It maybe as simple as just replacing this part if the lock cylinder still turns easily.

Is the lock cylinder(tumblers) part of the ignition switch assembly or can I order the cylinder seperately?

You would have to call Nissan to answer that question.
