Shifter goes left in Neutral
Shifter goes left in Neutral
IN neutral my shifter goes to the left in between 1st and 2nd instead of in the middle between 3rd and 4th. If i push it right it still has the spring action to the middle, but pushing it left it has no resistance and stays left. I seem to be able to drive fine, I am just about to take a trip to cleveland for an interview and do not want my shifter falling off. hehe
Any help appreciated!
THanks

i think that's normal
there are 2 springs on each side in the shifter assembly, the one on the right is alot stiffer than the one on the left. maybe it either broke, not installed correctly or isnt seated right. I havent looked into a maxima shifter but I seen them in toyotas.

well it has to be something wrong for sure, it just started doing it for no reason suddenly. It is now easy to accidentaly shift into 1st instead of third. My aftermarkter full warranty covers everything EXCEPT what is listed in the contract, I don't see anything about these springs in the contract?

A few days later I found the spring and put it back in, and now it's all good. So chances are the spring just broke.
And as to whether or not its safe to drive, I wouldn't worry about it. I drove like that for a week or so. Just remember it won't pop back to center as you're going through gears.
You got to go from the bottom.
here is a link for the writeup. Its basically the procedures for changing a STS. Just get to the part where you locate the spring.
website
go under how-2 then look for it in the second colum.

If you have a short throw shifter installed, you may wanna take the heat shield above the cat off. My spring popped off all of a sudden because the bottom of the shifter was hitting the sheild when I shifted aggressively. I took it off and have had no problems. May be something to consider...

Cool thanks guys, maybe if this spring is covered under my extended warranty, I can have them put my straight pipe in, instead of putting the old cat back on? Or maybe my dealer would not put on a straight pipe for me? =D

Who knows, doesn't hurt to try. If they don't cover it, its pretty easy to fix. Took me like half an hour.

Just a thought but after i got my spring changed, it would have more spring in the new side compared to the side with the older spring, id say while they are replacing one, why not get the other one done too.....

There is only one spring to the assembly. The way the tranny is attatched to the shifter linkage automatically resists a push to the right. The spring keeps the shifter centered, since there is no resistance to the left.

OK my dealer said that my bracket broke that holds the spring and the spring was lost in the process.
My aftermarket warranty will not cover it. In my contract it says they do NOT cover: "Nuts, bolts, and fasteners", I have argued many times now with the company that a bracket is not one of those things. Am I missing something? Is there anything I can do?
So I think I have the right part numbers, can anyone verify?
